It’s tough watching that video. If I were on that boat, I’m looking to bail out and float. I assume the PFDs were even worth a damn. Enclosed spaces on the water are death traps.

Been on one of those Duck Boats in Galveston. That thing does a little loop on a glasslike little bay/lake on the bayside. I can't imagine being in that thing in any "boating" conditions. It felt and sounds sketchy in optimum conditions. 1930's technology loaded down with 2018 asses?

I was on those boats last year. there are life jackets but they are not immediately accessible. nobody has to wear them. those guys drive those things like maniacs on the road. I believe alot of that water is 40+ feet deep.

That's astonishing they were out with that severe of a storm near, have to imagine that company will be out of business

Pressure to not cancel the trip overrides having sense about the weather - you have to be weather aware as a consumer and not rely on the operator to have sense about bad weather.

So, it appears to me after watching the video, that it may have been one of those "everyone please stay calm and please stay seated" scenarios that went badly. From the video, its pretty clear that there was a point where, and the captain you would think had to see this, the bow of the boat was heavy and obviously starting to take water. At that point you get folks out of that boat as quickly as possible. They all would have already had the pfd's on at that point, right???

We rode those when I was young and I remember having to wear a PFD. Don’t think adults did though. Maybe it capsized in deep water?

i'm guessing the fatal factor was tied more to being trapped inside of it once capsized since it's closed in

If the captain didn’t move people to the back of the boat to raise the bow, he’s an idiot.

Someone mentioned that putting on pfd is not required. Why not?

I wonder if the back door could be easily opened from the inside. Looks like the bow was under water and people would not have waded in waist deep water to try to exit a small school bus door up front.

They should have been wearing the pfd's....I'd be curious to know how many of those that died, had them on. If they had them on when it went down, it would have made if very difficult to get out of the boat with it being enclosed. the pfd would have pinned them to the top. They would have had to get out to have a chance...obviously.

Duck boat accident on land, with 5 fatalities

That grainy view of the end is better than the one at this site because this doesn't show the wave action, although it shows the loss of freeboard as the duck sank

Well stated/asked. Here's my questions:

1) I am a decent swimmer, but in a storm like that, with no PFD, can an average swimmer make it ~60 feet to that dinner cruise boat? I have swam in a churning ocean, but not a storm like that.

2) having the PFD on just after it capsizes will trap you in, right? It pushes you to the "top" (former bottom or side) and limits egress.

I think it is really stupid that people were taken out in a boat when storms were approaching.

We watched the Coast Guard do a number of PFD checks on the Canal-Algiers Ferry. They take all the PFDs down and try to rip the straps off of the float part. Any weakness and the PFD gets tossed and trashed.

But you are right, any PFD on is going to trap you under that canopy.

Should have criminal charges brought against the captain and the company.

Pisses me off watching that video. Idiot filming should have got his fat arse in the water and pulled people out of the boat before it sank.

I was going to say how was it that the boat was clearly struggling for 4 minutes and no help was called. But after watching video it looked like a rescue boat right behind it when it went down.

I go to TRL pretty often, those whitecaps were pretty impressive. Dont think ive ever seen them like that.

I understand some frustration, but are you suggesting that in that storm, a passenger on a dinner cruise should (presumably) find and launch a lifeboat from his vessel, and somehow reach the distressed duckboat, and begin offloading passengers?

There may have been some ways he could have directed assistance, but let's not go overboard here.

No way I would have sat there and watched kids drown. I promise you I would have strapped on a life jacket and been in that water jerking people out of that boat as soon as I saw the front end going down like that.
