We already know it’s desolate and not sustainable for any form of life to live.

A colony would require humans to live inside a permanent enclosure.

So what exactly is the point?

To say that we did it?

Seems like a colossal waste of money and time.

Humanity consists of moronically destructive individuals and our species will most likely self-destruct, resulting in our extinction.

In Scruffy’s personal opinion, the most advantageous and intelligent action would be to spread humanity as far and wide as humanly possible throughout the stars, making our extinction essentially impossible.

The moon and Mars are where we start.

Space exploration and expansion should be top 3 government/global expenditures.

Human civilization has always been about expanding new frontiers, space (and the oceans) are the next logical step.

The kings and queens of Europe wagered money spent to explore and colonize new lands as a risk. It paid off handsomely for many of them.

Also happens to be why you are here.

Short sighted vision will end our species.
Concept of interstellar travel seems so pointless because as of now, yeah it’s impossible and improbable.
But so did crossing oceans in wooden boats in the 1400’s.
It’s a small stepping stone towards the stars.
We are going to Mars baw

To start the process of terraforming Mars and use those lessons learned on the next planets we (as humanity) will inhabit.

It's the next thing. Getting there will breed invention, discovery, and advancement that only happens when we commit to a goal without any particular purpose other than to explore the possibilities.

Exploration and discovery is as innately human and instinctual as procreation.

To start making big strides toward becoming a multi-planetary species

If we annihilate each other here, our species would still survive to see the universe

How do you know the Space Aliens don’t already consider it theirs and will fight to defend their property?

How many Mars probes have mysteriously “gone offine” or crashed?

Not an accident.

So we can load up a few hundred clones and put them in deep freeze and wake them up one by one to mine the planet.
