I searched a few terms and found nothing on this.
Tuesday morning, November 29, 2022, Fr. James Jeanfreau, Jr. was found dead in his woodshop on the campus of Immaculate Conception Parish in Marrero.

Speculation is that it happened Monday night as he was working with his lathe; it was quick, he didn't suffer.

He and I attended the same seminary high school, he graduated in May of 1980, I started August of 1980.

interesting that the murder of the priest by a 30 year incarcerated raper released on parole just 90 days ago didn't make a peep on headlines.

It is. Thank you for catching that. It is, however, Fr. Jimmy's own father.

In high school I took machine shop classes for 2 years.

one of my friends, working with another guy was tightening the chuck when the other guy hit the start button. Chuck key hit my friend in the forehead. I didn't think he would ever stop bleeding.

Yeah I've seen some lathe videos that were pretty disturbing, and there is nothing about them that lead me to believe there is no suffering. The quick part is right though...it's amazing how fast shite can get sideways with that kind of machinery.

as a woodworking amateur who has never touched a lathe, can someone explain what could have happened here?

That and a tabletop jointer are the most dangerous items in a wood shop.

I urge anyone getting into that hobby to avoid those two items until they are experienced enough to recognize the dangers of what's really happening.

any number of things. clothing or hair gets caught in the spinning chuck or wood. chuck key left in the chuck when started. wood spindle breaks and sends sharp "stick" flying at you.

I've heard he fell on it face first...but wouldn't the thing stop? Thought these things usually have a safety feature.

I always feel most "nervous" using my table saw... but I don't have a lathe.

I can see how something getting caught at full speed would be traumatic.

table saw is definitely my most dangerous tool as well. i use it frequently enough to know what i'm doing but not frequently enough to not be a little intimidated every time I flip it on, which I find to be a healthy level. always respect it.

Not a chance, it would be bad.
