A 10lb block of oak spinning at 1300 rpm would likely dent steel plate pretty easily.

Man, if you're spinning a 10lb chunk of oak at that high of an RPM, you've already got 2 strikes against you. General rule of thumb is don't go over 1000rpm, and the larger the piece, the lower the rpm.

interesting that the murder of the priest by a 30 year incarcerated raper released on parole just 90 days ago didn't make a peep on headlines.

Do a google search and quite a few links come up. What constitutes a "peep"?

That said, I still maintain the most dangerous machine found in a well-equipped hobby shop is a shaper.

I dont even know what a shaper is. Did a google image search and it definitely looks pretty scary. In any event, I find it unlikely that I will ever have either one of those or a lathe in my shop.

Shaper is more powerful and meant for more robust work.

More power and bigger bits. Usually used for things like raised panel cabinets. I have a Sawstop, so although I respect it, at least there is some safety feature on it. My jointer just looks like it wants to eat fingers, especially with the helical head cutter. But the closest I've ever come is at the router table. It goes south fast when you have an incident there. Always use some sort of push block to keep hands as far away as possible.

one of my friends, working with another guy was tightening the chuck when the other guy hit the start button. Chuck key hit my friend in the forehead. I didn't think he would ever stop bleeding.

I worked in a machine shop in HS. Occasionally I would polish parts on the lathe and sometimes I would leave the key in the chuck between swapping parts. The shop foreman chewed my arse real quick when he saw that, and rightfully so. Said machinists in the navy used to have to wear the key around their neck for a week if they did that. Apparently some of them weighed 5 lbs
