re: Market adjustment for new car sales

I'm going to go out on a limb here and you can down vote all you want but I smell a concerted ,concocted, lie about a chip shortage. It is just too convenient too believe at this point. Robots make these chips. The robots make these chips faster than you can blink your eyes. They can work 24/7. This is no longer adding up.
Auto manufacturers predicted Covid would significantly reduce demand and cancelled advance chip orders. Demand actually increased and by the time they realized it, production capacity was taken by others who use similar chips. Auto chips aren't especially difficult to make, there's just no excess build capacity right now.
quote:
However, the vast majority of the chips we use daily are not made in high-end fabs. They’re made using older process nodes in older fabs that have likely been fully or substantially amortized. This is especially true of parts designed for automotive applications. Cars and trucks are filled with microcontrollers that aren’t made with and don’t require EUV or other sorts of advanced lithography.
quote:
However, the dip in new car sales proved short-lived, and suddenly, demand for new cars skyrocketed. When the automakers tried to file new chip orders, they discovered that the fab capacity that had been dedicated to making automotive chips had been reallocated to other customers. Lead times went through the roof and these automakers now find themselves with severe chip shortages. As a result, new cars and trucks are being built, but without the semiconductors needed to finish them. Without the chips, they can’t be shipped.
How Long Will it Take for the Chip Shortage to Ease?
Link above is from the Electronic Engineering Journal.
Taking a logically cold business view, one could say the auto manufacturers don't know how to run their business. Most of what I've read says this shortage will persist until the end of 2022.

Some jeep dealers have been doing discounts if your custom order. 7-8% off msrp.
Here is a lease broker that is offering significant discounts on preorders for 2022. You dont have to lease you can buy but leasing especially on the 4xe wrangler or grand cherokee 4xe will be a great deal

Probably gonna get in on the gc 4xe. I have the wrangler 4xe and it was a great deal at a little over $300 a month for the lease. Also great not having to buy as much $3+ dollar gas.

Might be okay if they give you an extra $5k more for your trade-in due to market conditions. Seen the price for used SUVs and Trucks lately?

I got $2k off MSRP on a new BMW x5 for my wife last week
They will recoup that within 18 months several times over in the service department repairing that biatchmobile, congrats!

If nobody was paying it, they wouldn’t charge it. Some people have been stupid enough to let salespeople get away with peeling MSRP + 5k from them.
Market economics, you either want the car and pay market price or you don’t, just like any other product, has nothing to do with stupidity.

Did you try the Will Cover method? I think you suck the manager off or something.

Ford Salesman was offering $500 off MSRP for any standard vehicles, in the past the offer was invoice, well the last two cars I bought from them. I told him I would wait it out but I know some people that are trading in year old cars for a "profit" and I know I can make money off my 2021 boat I got in 2020.
Vehicle prices are just stupid.

That’s only like $60/month extra spread over 84 months, baw. Get the lady what she deserves.

You better wait then

Shopped for a Bentley GT V8. Dude wanted $205k for it. I said no way. Wouldn’t pay a dollar over $29k

Very glad I picked up a new to me vehicle early this year right before Brandon ruined the auto industry.

I did the same thing. The dealerships were flooded with inventory back in February and March. Now they are all empty.

Just buy a beater from individual to get around and wait out the storm.

Maybe, but supply chain issues are real. This is assuming all of the raw materials are on hand to make the chips. I seriously doubt every car manufacturer in the country would self-sabotage their overall sales just to make a few more bucks on a few sales with "market adjustment" fees.

I was able to get a new Yukon XL for GM family pricing in October which was about $7,500 below MSRP. I have bought a number of vehicles from this dealership and particular salesman so they lifted their waiver on the “no discounts” policy.

So, probably a dumb question, but...(based on the article) why would car manufacturers preorder all other parts to make a car but not chips? Why would they "cancel chip orders due to probable reduced demand" but order everything else?
