People are so saturated with throws they get to the point where they only want, many demand, specific items. I throw almost all novelty/krewe and am happy to oblige them if it is readily available but sometimes you just can't get to it in time (we moved - shortest time on the float in recent memory) or I didn't have it so I would substitute whatever was handy. 90% of the time the substitute would be dropped, most of the time without even be looked at. We're not talking about beads either. I didn't even open the sole bag of "Canal" beads I loaded because of how fast we moved.
Also disappointing is the trend of less and less kids on the route. It seems they are being squeezed out by the high school/college age kids.

Best thing caught this year - Muses bamboo wooden kitchen spoon - will surely be used for a while.

I’m all for more things like this -
Do a Roux spoon for your parade next year

The great part about the part of the route on Magazine from Jefferson and the more extended route of Thoth is how concentrated families are in that area. There are folks from outside of New Orleans who will come in to catch only Thoth on Super Sunday as it cruises its exclusive path before joining the regular route on Jefferson and Magazine,.

This is generally how I feel. I like to have a mix of beads, feather boas, and good things. Throws are generally for me to have fun and for the person to have fun on the route during the parade. I don’t really care about what happens with it after the parade.

Throwing 1 good thing a block sounds miserable, especially since that good thing will still likely end up in the trash.

Thoth has been improving with its options each year. In addition to beads and boas, I threw Ice/Beer buckets, flashlights, cups, shower loofas, hats, and t-shirts.

The one thing a block was hyperbole. But throwing stuff that folks get out of the way of rather than catch is odd to me. I like those making eye contact then throwing moments,.

Boas are great because everyone likes them. The price seems to have jumped in recent years.

T-shirts, socks, and cups are the things I end up having for way too long and using regularly. Well, maybe not socks regularly, but I keep them and wear them during Mardi Gras season.

I have an odd sense of humor and would always search for something that would make folks scratch their heads.

The dollar store one year had ovulation predictor kits. I bought them out and printed out colorful sticker that had Mardi Gras and the year on them, Folks were chasing me down to get another after I threw them.

fricking love the super random stuff like this

I enjoy the parades as much as the next person but I just don’t reach for beads. Like others have said - it’s just a waste

On one of the Zulu floats a guy was throwing purses, comforters, and blankets. All of that seems pretty practical.

Some jackass on a float in either Okeanos or Midcity threw a bunch of whistles and all the kids had whistles around us blowing them non-stop. We had about 100 whistles blowing constantly after that. Wish he hadn't wasted his money on that idea.

I get 3/4 beads - 1 of each Mardi Gras color and maybe one with a medallion/etc. on it - and then I'm done.

I'll reach for fun ones for my kids, but not too hard of a reach

My boys just want footballs, frisbees, toy guns, etc. after their necks are full of beads. When I was a kid I used to fill giant bags with beads and we'd force our parents to keep them until my mom would purge without telling us a year later and we would be none the wiser.

We caught Okeanos, Mid-City. and Thoth this year and next year we are going back to the Thoth only part of the route. It's much less crowded and more family friendly. Thoth is easily my favorite parade because of this.

When I rode the first time I figured out quickly the nobody wants smaller single beads.
I started buying a lot more of the small bags of beads, krewe beads, and a ton of plastic toys and little stuffed animals. And of course little footballs to throw to the back to people on porches and sitting in windows and such.

I love throwing things people can actually use. Hammers, screwdrivers, canning jars...links of chain.

My son's friend caught a brand-new Sitka cap at the Church Point parade and gave it to me. I'd say that's not a waste.
