I just ignore people who say bad things about it. I don't know anyone who actually had a kid go to Pitcher that has anything bad to say about it. It's a great school.
My SO is from here. Did public schools (not sure which ones) until SPS. He had the same impression until we put the kids there. I think people from here are conditioned to say all Covington schools suck. But, there's no gauge. I'm from BR where we have truly awful public schools. People here have no idea what a bad school is. They only know what they've been told about schools they didn't go to and don't send their kids to. And apparently the worst thing they can say is a school is diverse or has poor people. It's stupid.

There are a lot of very nice subdivisions north of I-12 that go to Mandeville schools. My kids went to Lake Harbor, FJH and FHS. One graduated LSU and the other is a sophomore. They were excellent schools. They had plenty of friends that went to the local privates. Whatever works best for the individual. Successful kids will flourish wherever they are.
There are plenty of drugs, drinking and finger banging sessions to be had with either option.
Good kids in the Mandeville public schools will track for honors, dual enrollment and AP and likely have a 30 ACT (25 is the average for FHS/MHS). A 29 gets you TOPS Honors and 1,500 per year from LSU or a free ride including dorm at a directional. The AP scores and dual enrollment classes basically allow you to start as a sophomore.
It's a personal choice. It's nice to have a paid for option.

Is this not an option at all the NS schools including private?

Yes, he offered that specific knowledge of the program at MHS as an illustration.
Read his entire post again, he's exactly correct in it.

quote:True, but I was thinking of the Hwy 21 area, where the boundary is pretty much I-12. I know for sure that above the interstate means Covington High. It's not a bad school, but it's not Mandeville.

In response to someone else, I don't believe the Catholic schools have gifted/AP tracks, but the public schools do, starting in later elementary.

If you want to be a cheap frick then go public but any answer other than private is incorrect. The Northshore schools have to deal with common core and common people. No matter what anyone says that is the truth.
Maybe the common people part is true. Definitely not the common core part.
Don't let the name "private" schools fool you. They are almost all receiving state money, and thus teach common core. (Lake Castle and some others refuse state money)

Wife went to Lake Castle's open house last night and wasn't very impressed

Every day before school my senior year I would read Lord of the Flies on the spinning book rack set by a chair in the library. I finished it before the Christmas Break. I also checked out Ender's Game for my first time that year as well.
Get your kid to check out Ender's Game, and they may see me on the card! A famous TDer!

They may not call them that, but they certainly do.
Honors classes, etc.

That's what we had, I was just wondering if things changed over the years and private went away from that. Wouldn't make sense if they did.
Just to offer another perspective, my family moved around a lot when I was growing up. Sucked every few years having to make new friends. We finally settled and I spent all 5 years from 8-12 in one school. Most of the friends I graduated with I am still really close to. With that said, I feel like the NS public system up until high school has too many moving parts. Your in one school for 2 years then off to another the next and so on. Good for some kids, not so good for some who may have trouble adjusting.
We chose OLL. It's on par with the public schools and we wanted a Catholic education early on. Ideally we will go with SPS & SSA but we are far away from that decision. What I got out of the private high school I attended was more than just an education and from what I hear SPS offers much of the same.

Every day before my senior year, I'd get drunk or high, then two classes and PE 4, then short day

Sippy, I had the same thing coming up and swore that my kids wouldn't have to do that (changing schools, moving, etc.).
I moved and changed schools after
1st grade
3rd grade
4th grade
8th grade
Screw that.
I was able to not make my kids ever have to change schools.

Excellent school. She ended with 18 hours of credit when she went to college.
Lots of people rave about NS public schools, but while they are better than NOLA public schools (duh), they are very average when compared to the rest of the country.

Our kids go to school together FWIW
My oldest went to Marigny now Magnolia, youngest goes to Marigny.
Couldn't be happier with everything about the schools. Parent events are a little odd - definitely some salt of the earth types, but the kids all seem nice and well behaved.
The teachers do not tolerate any crazy bullshite from students and reinforce good values and behavior.
I think on the Northshore private schools are more about the snobbery aspect in most cases (as opposed to other places like NO or BR where it's a virtual necessity) which is funny considering many people who aren't that well off but will fork out the money for the status, but that's how the Northshore is sometimes.
Generally private school families are:
Legacy - parent(s) went there, the group think and peer pressure to send your kids cannot be overcome by most. If not you will be judged.
Jones - gotta keep up with them. Easy to spot because within 5 minutes of talking to them they'll let you know what school their kid goes to and even how much it costs. Next they'll be sure to tell you which McMansion neighborhood they live in.
Religious - nuff said. I can sympathize, especially with some of the stuff in public schools, but remember local school board control seems to limit the crazy leftist stuff.
Helicopter - can only sleep at night knowing or thinking their child will be as sheltered as possible for as long as possible. Unfortunately, private school kids do drugs, have sex and do crazy shite too.
Other - just good folks who want the best for their kids and have a comfortable enough lifestyle to afford it even if it's not really necessary but like the camaraderie and cohesiveness of it.
FWIW, I'm not against private schools and would consider sending my kids at an upper grade level but it definitely is not any kind of necessity.

Yeah, but the upper average is much higher. If your kid isn't dumb, he/she will be in honors or AP classes, and will likely get a 30+ ACT

Exactly.
Like a lot of things in life, you get what you pay for.
Public education, by and large, is an embarrassment in this state. I shake my head at NS educators crowing about how great their schools are when the only real significant advantage they have is demographics.
Paul Pastorek was the man, but he hurt too many feelings so they ran him off. Congrats Louisiana, stay behind the rest of the country.

Covington high does NOT have a daycare. There is a daycare across the street that is not affiliated with CHS.

Thank you for your post. I have a sophomore at CHS now and loves it. I have another daughter who is a grad of CHS and current freshman at LSU. She is majoring in engineering and doing very well. St. Tammany parish schools all teach the same curriculum. ALL of the public schools are excellent and have excellent teachers. We have not had a single problem with CHS. The false premise placed on CHS is from people that are scared of the diverse population at CHS....if you get my drift. I would not hesitate to recommend CHS to anyone.

The Mandeville school district on the Hwy 1088 corridor is probably the best public school district in Mandeville. Marigny elementary for K-1, Lake Harbor for 2-4, Mandeville middle for 5-6, Monteleone Jr for 7-8 and Lakeshore High to finish it out. My 6 yr old is at Marigny now and we love it.
My kids went to Marigny and now go to Magnolia Trace and Mandeville Middle. We have been very happy with the education they have received. There is no way I would send them to private school. Slidell and Covington might be a different story.
