CLINTON, LA (WAFB) - A black man awaiting trial in East Feliciana Parish is seeking a change of venue because of a Confederate Monument that is located near the entrance to the courthouse.

He says the presence of the monument would "prevent him from having a fair and impartial jury trial."

Ronnie Anderson is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

In the lawsuit, Anderson alleges the monument could prevent him, an African American, from getting a fair trial.

"The Confederate Monument features a Confederate Soldier on a pedestal which was erected in 1909 and stands at least 30 feet in height," the lawsuit says.

"Defendant believes that this Confederate Monument displayed prominently in front of the East Feliciana Parish Courthouse sends a message to African Americans of intimidation and oppression, communicating that justice may not be fair and impartial at a Courthouse that was nostalgic and sentimental over the institution of slavery that the Confederacy fought for in the American Civil War," the lawsuit says.LINK

Maybe he shouldn't have caught a felony and then maybe he shouldn't have illegally had a fricking gun after having said felony.

I am assuming he is arguing that a city that has a confederate monument near its courthouse is a city with residents that supports and loves the days of the confederacy, meaning that city would produce jurors not of fair mind in regards to a trial with an african american

I am not saying I agree, but I am sure that it is his logic, and quite frankly, that logic is prolly somewhat on track for alot of towns with confederate statues next to the courthouse

Did the man steal the gun from the statue? Is the statue going to testify against the defendant?

If you were born black, instead of enjoying your white privilege, you'd agree with that man.

That would be an incredibly dangerous precedent to set.

If there was a Wakanda statue outside of a courthouse, I would be skeptical I am going to get a fair trial

As a white male, would I be able to change my venue to a city with a Confederate statue?
