We have a prohibition against "cruel and unusal punishment" in our country, but I fail to see how we define cruel and unusual. If the criminal commits a crime - burglary, robbery, drug trafficing, rape, murder, torture... isnt that the criminal saying "I personally don't find this cruel or I wouldn't do it", thus making it ok to do something drastic to that person?
Also, by drastic, I don't mean truly cruel (IE feed them to pirhanas, draw & quarter, etc...) but perhaps a long prison sentence without air conditioning, soft bed, gymnasium, hot food, etc.
If you go to prison for serious stuff, you should be seriously punished. Concrete floor, latrine-hole in floor, 6x6" window.

To add to it
Another time Had my door wing pulled open to break in. And damaged the roof. Ptretty sure they watched me thru the window while I slept on the couch.
Years later I heard them outside again. One bumped the truck. Ran outside with 12 gauge and shot in the air. That was the end of trespassing onto my property

Yeah no one is removing a lug nut by hand - especially if it was put on with an impact.

Next time use that red loc-tite on the lug nuts.......no hood rat is going to break that with hand tools.

People hate a thief because that thief took the time to watch you. Took brief inventory of your quaint little life and habits. Took advantage of your sense of security. Then struck during the dead of night or when you were at your most vulnerable, after you had finally convinced yourself safe and sound and untouchable, before slipping away again, leaving no trace. When discovering you'd been had, your anger turned on itself as there was no one to focus your rage at, leaving you spinning and muttering while your neighbors gazed at you. Not empathizing, just thinking better you than me. Leaving you looking and feeling like a fool.
