#BREAKING: Saline County prosecutors have filed murder charges in connection to a death investigation involving an Eldorado juvenile.
According to Saline County court records, 41 year-old Justin D. Maloney of Raleigh is facing three first degree murder charges.
The charges stem from an incident Wednesday night on Raleigh Chapel Road in Raleigh. A juvenile was transported from the scene and later died from their injuries.
The victim was identified as Nathaniel Potts, a sophomore at Eldorado High School. Saline County Sheriff Whipper Johnson previously said Illinois State Police were asked to lead the investigation because the home involved is owned by a family member of a county official who was not involved in the incident.
Court records show Maloney made an initial court appearance Friday morning in Saline County Court. Prosecutors also filed a petition for pretrial detention. A detention hearing has been scheduled for May 28.
Illinois State Police have not yet released additional details surrounding the investigation. The Swinford Media Group has reached out to ISP for more information regarding the investigation.

from another article
considering OP lives near-ish to this region, he has probably caught word that Nathaniel Potts is a black teen. (speculation)
quote:
Johnson described the case as involving a teenage burglary suspect who died during the incident. He said another person was being held as a person of interest while formal charges were being reviewed.

3 counts of first-degree murder?
Seems like only 1 person was killed. And if he was killed in the course of a robbery, even if it was ruled not a good shoot, that wouldn't generally be first degree.

The state of today's journalism is pathetic.

And/or it might not have been an actual robbery or at least isnt clear cut on that yet. That could be what the guy claimed initially and even believed was happening, but the arrest may be because they think he overreacted and wasn’t in reasonable danger anymore or at all.
The sheriff was on the scene by 9pm which seems early for a break in with someone home, but I don’t know the area. Could have been one of those TikTok challenges where they go bang on the door and take off.
Not sure if the below is accurate, but similar to Texas law and why the student who knifed and murdered another student at the track meet was charged with murder as a 1st degree felony, 1st degree murder in Illinois might not be like many think it usually is.
quote:
In Illinois, first degree murder is defined under 720 ILCS 5/9-1 as the killing of an individual without lawful justification, where the perpetrator:
Intends to kill or cause great bodily harm, or knows that their acts will cause death or great bodily harm to another. Or
Knows that their acts create a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to another individual. Or
Commits or attempts to commit a forcible felony (other than second degree murder), and in the course of that crime or flight therefrom, causes the death of a person (known as felony murder).
Illinois does not require proof of premeditation or "lying in wait" for a first degree murder conviction.
There is very little out there on this with a lot of the initial reporting being about the school and district mourning a student with nothing on how he died initially.
