When I was young and dumb I would spend lots of time in Baltimore. Drive in from the sticks to enjoy the night life.

Made an illegal left turn on red while drunk. Cop blocking the road fell off his trunk laughing at me.

There was a fight in a parking garage. Petite officer blonde McHotty handed out a judicious arse shopping with her night stick before sending everyone home.

No, irrespective of this particular case and your examples, leniency has caused rampant crime and unsafe cities.

I was under the impression crime, or at least violent crime has been on a pretty continuous downslope since the 90s. Is this not the case for DC?

Maybe, maybe not. There are many issues surrounding the reporting of crime and then even debate about whether the statistics are manipulated. What do older folks always say? “We used to never lock our doors and things were peaceful”. Further, the left’s soft on crime agenda has been going on for a while. We also have many crimes go unreported and that’s hard to calculate. Teens are out in every town and city stealing from cars nightly. Many victims never report it because they don’t notice or nothing was taken so they’d rather go to work than file a police report. We also regularly see violent crimes committed by people who judges let out on bail.

But the punishment will be well beyond reason because it’s a federal officer and not a regular citizen he assaulted

i fail to see the problem.

you do realize the D.C. police commander was recently suspended for falsifying crime statistics? He even admitted he was told “from top down” to downgrade violent crimes to lesser offenses in coordination with command staff directives.

Teenage Crime Up in NY
Here is an article where New York shootings and homicides are down this year but NYPD commissioner says between 2018 and 2024 juvenile shooters are up 200% and juvenile victims up over 80%. What do we make of these things? And I think these trends are likely replicated nationally in cities.
