I am going to go out on a limb here and say that a bear likely killed a native in the 16,000+ year history of humans living in "Florida"

I live in the area. FWC came in an killed any bear within a half mile or so to find the murdering bear. They killed 3. Two medium sized one and a very big one. One of the medium sized ones did it, I believe. it's a shame all around, but the guy lived in a trailer in the Everglades and it sounds like the attack was analogous to getting killed by interrupting a burglar. Was that really "stalking"?

Black bears will definitely stalk humans.

Mountain lions do too, most folks are just not aware enough to notice them.

The general rule is that if you actually see a mountain lion it isn't stalking you. Well, unless you see it right before it is on your arse.

Any word on if he had fed the bears, or not secured his garbage and allowed them to regularly get into it?

If that is the case, then the FWC's decision to euthanize the bears in the area makes more sense. Those bears would be food-conditioned, and the old saying of, "A fed bear is a dead bear." is a thing for a reason.

I suppose I could have added more nuance. The unbridled development that's been going on in SW Florida is encroaching on their habitat. This is leading to more and more interactions between bears and humans. But if what you said is true than I am surprised. I thought there were more of them down here, as opposed to the panthers which are dwindling.

not gonna lie, I just read those numbers on whatever I found on google, but the sources seemed consistent and legit.
