The leader of the Seperatists posted on the Russian equivalent of FB 30 minutes after the plane crashed that they had shot down a Ukrainian Anotov 26. It has been deleted.
To paraphrase, he stated "we warned you not to fly over our space. We have video The bird as fallen."
Sounds like a real bad mistake. Thought they were shooting at a Ukrainian cargo plane again. Oops.

fox news just reported they have the black box. This will likely tell us that a catastrophic explosion happened on the aircraft likely caused by a SAM. (I think it can anyway) But I suspect the flight recorder will show the plane flying normally no issues, no panic in the cockpit everything as normal than suddenly a loud explosion and the plane plumits towards the ground confirming a SAM strike.

I'm sure he meant it originated in the US, was carrying 62 AMCITs, and was thought to be a US intelligence collection mission (which is why it was specifically targeted by the Soviets).

No, I've only got my Airline Transport Pilot license and over 5000 hours of flight time. Please educate me on what a "squawk" is.
The command and control station doesn't necessarily interrogate a target for transponder. In an ideal world it will look for an IFF signal and barring none assume it is not 'friendly'. However if these separatists are simply using a tracking radar for targeting purposes, without any protocols for assuring it is indeed hostile (like any professional army would). Then it is not inconceivable that they saw plane, targeted plane, killed plane. Simple as that thought process.
