Your ignorance of this subject has nothing to do with my knowledge of it or real-world experience with it, but I'm going to educate you because it's important.
Let's say I made a thread as boosiebadazz calling you out by your IRL name saying you raped me and stole from me and all this defamatory stuff. Chicken would delete the thread because he's smart and doesn't want to deal with litigation, but let's pretend he didn't. You could absolutely sue John Doe aka boosiebadazz for defamation. You could name tigerdroppings, LLC as party to the litigation and seek damages from it due to my defamatory conduct, but Section 230 of the Communications Decent Act offers Chicken immunity for what I post here. But you could convince a judge to issue a subpoena to Chicken to get my IP address off his servers and turn it over to you. That IP will also reveal my internet service provider and you can then subpoena their records for the physical address and account from which that IP pinged. All of a sudden, boosiebadazz isn't that anonymous.
And I used the child porn example because I clerked for the US Attorney's office in law school and this is the process by which you go after people who produce and post child porn. A little different in the legal standards because it's a criminal matter, but the overall point being is that you're not shielded from prosecution or being found liable for tortious conduct just because you hide behind a screenname on a message board.

I work in IT. Almost everything that you post on the internet can be traced back to you if you someone can get the right subpoenas.
