This morning's magnitude 7.4 earthquake in Colombia caused strong shaking across western Columbia. An estimated 1.5 million people experienced shaking near intensity 7, strong enough to cause damage to unreinforced masonry buildings especially. The earthquake occurred at a depth of ~100 km, within the slab of old seafloor sinking beneath the South American continent. These so-called intermediate depth, interslab earthquakes are less dangerous than shallow earthquakes of the same magnitude because the fault break is farther from the earth's surface. But these faults also break in a way that releases energy at frequencies that are damaging to buildings. Intermediate depth earthquakes tend to have fewer aftershocks than more shallow quakes, but strong aftershocks are possible and pose a continuing hazard during rescue and recovery.

As scary and sad as this is, I can only think of George Lopez saying how latinos build everything "better, faster, cheaper.." in one of his stand up specials.
I remember feeling the 7.+ that hit southern California a few years ago. Everything in the area shifted and swayed, but didn't topple. We felt it in southern Nevada almost at the Utah border.
All I can say to that race baiting POS is our American engineering builds everything safer and smarter.
I feel for the Columbian people, but their government, Venezuela's and Mexico's as well, all went cheaper and faster.

I know this was different earthquake that wasn't likely to cause as bad of damage as those in Venezuela (and they had twins of similar strength), but it looks like Columbia faired better than Venezuela in that regard. The buildings actually look of better quality in comparison, but looks can be deceiving, I guess.

Hurricanes suck but you know when they’re coming and can choose to evacuate. Earthquakes not so much

Of all the natural disasters, I feel like I would handle earthquakes the absolute worst. The idea of solid ground not being reliable anymore is just fricking terrifying to me.
That first video is nightmare fuel with gigantic concrete blocks raining down as people run out of the building.
