I swam in that pool during orientation in the summer of 1994!! An old friend from gradeschool/HS and I decided to bring a flask of bourbon and get drunk and explore campus on our own. We ended up at the Huey P Long Fieldhouse. It was like going back in time to some old bathhouse building in the 20s or 30s. You could visualize how awesome it must have been when new. It also had a oldschool 2-3' elevated diving board if I remember right. Gainers while drunk...check!

Very cool building, but crumbling. What a day that was!!

The pool is/was awesome. I got to swim workouts there several times when I was at LSU and it was always such a unique experience, like swimming in the Roman Baths.

Back in the 1980's, LSU offered a Rifle Marksmanship class. There was a shooting range in the basement of that building. I think they only shot .22's but, nevertheless, can you imagine the Pearl Clutching today if people knew there were GUNS!!!! on campus?

I think they still do, I took it in 2005 to get out of Technical Writing.

Then I joined ROTC (non scholarship) and very nearly contracted at one point. Needless to say my life would be much different if the SGT wasn’t just trying to get home one night and brushed me off after I asked him about contracting...

It’s a great old building. I played racquetball in those hot arse courts for a long time. I have pictures of my mother on her sorority swim team in the mid 50’s swimming there. My father boxed there and the Parker Coliseum which I have pictures of as well. He was a few years before Crowe Peel. Glad they’ve finally started on it.

Who is the contractor?

Are they going to use the dirt from the Indian Mounds to fill in the pool?

Considering Huey used the dirt from an extremely large Indian mound by the 4 river spot in Jonesville to build the runway for a bridge, it would be keeping the tradition.

Anyone remember the story on the size of the pool? Wasn’t it nonstandard (too long?) for intercollegiate competition and some type of installation to shorten it’s length used during swimming meets?

When are they going to demo Kirby Smith?

Man, the 60's, 70's and 80's was super-low for building architecture.

They should rebuild the science building too. That is crappy looking building.

Now that's one name change I'd actually agree with!

Thats stupid, you dont have to agree with Huey Long's politics but the man is a Louisiana and US political icon. How many governors from his time can you name from other states hell how many can you name currently that aren't yours? Not to mention the direct impact he had on LSU, he deserves to have his name on buildings.

Yes, they will put the dirt right back where it came from.

Wasn't the shooting range in the Gym Armory NOT HPL?

Gym Armory hosted the first LSU BB games, had dance studios and a boxing ring as well.

The basement held an armory and locker rooms

A standard size Olympic pool is 50M long (55 yds or 164 feet). Because HPL had such a huge ego, he built the largest college or university swimming pool in the country - 1930's. The LSU pool is 55M long (60 yds or 180 feet). The LSU pool and other Olympic pools use a divider that can make the pool 25 yds, 25M, 50 yds, or 50M. The divider was also used to separate the swimming area from the diving end. The LSU pool did have dividers in the 1970's , not sure about earlier years.
