I have a good friend who is liberal, and I engage with him relatively often to try to understand his viewpoint on issues. I'm not a staunch conservative, but rather a moderate, and I cannot carry-on a productive conversation with him due to the fact that all of his arguments are based upon anecdotal evidence and how he "feels" as opposed to hard-line stats or objective measures.
He's a good friend of mine and it does not affect our relationship, but it's maddening at times.

Oh ffs. These kids are just being idiots.
i had a bit of fame by writing a letter to the editor in undergrad about idiots whining about our speaker. it's just so stupid
i don't care if it's liberals or conservatives whining. it's a literal ceremonial event. it's useless

i'll just say this

Oh ffs. These kids are just being idiots. I'm glad this crap wasn't happening 10 years ago when I was there. These fragile idiots won't do well in the real world.

ole Devlin
he tried a power play in class once to embarrass me and it didn't work out well for him
Yep, I've schooled him on more than a few occasions. We do actually agree on a few things, though, especially about access to the courts.

I think with that you have made my point as to why the speaker shouldn't be a political figure. Too much hostility towards politicians and too much irrationality in regard to politicians. Going all the way back to the Louisiana Governor and later Senator who, because of his political ideology, was shot by an angry Conservative. Only, unlike Scalise, this politician's wound were mortal. He dieded. Then they named a bridge after him.
So you actually believe the original Magic Bullet Theory? You don't subscribe to the nurses who mentioned that Kingfish mentioned to them that his fat lip was from, "...where he hit me," while he was in the Hospital?
That the 60 bullets State Police rang out with weren't what really hit him?
GMAFB.
This is an attack on free speech and free-thinking. These kids have the right to try it, but we have the right to point it out for what it is.

All of the time, actually.

Conversations with the potential to bring understanding have now become nothing more than exchanges of repulsive insults, slander and degrading remarks. The true middle ground has to take back control
So much this. Social media and 24 hour news have absolutely poisoned the well for debate in this country.

I don't typically talk about politics though, general conversations can display a person's values.

"I asked you already.
Name another LSU grad that would be a good commencement speaker that is an LSU grad, known and respected by a majority of the student body? As someone mentioned, Shaq, who has spoken before, but maybe he said no."
Todd Graves.
but fyi, as to Graves and Shaq, the LSU Law School traditionally picks someone who is themselves a graduate of LSU Law.
Todd Graves went to Georgia

As a moderate, I look to the left and right and see idiots on both sides

Bitchbaby Tyson has to be behind this.
Mr. Conditional Humanity himself(that was the buzz word he used when arguing against judging Alton Sterling based on his past).

I counted 6 actual students on there, although some other actual ones in the anonymous votes probably.
I do not support the petition, but I also recognize that they have a right to make one. Part of free speech.

From the modern left....yes. It isn't a reason to ban a speaker. Let them throw their tantrum. Let the adults ignore it.

he did not try to get me on a logical/policy point (no professor could b/c i never spoke unless called on
before class he asked me and my friends what we thought of the reading. we told him that we didn't read (b/c he said he didn't give negative participation grades). class starts and he immediately goes, "so Mr. SFP, what did you think about [some stupid case]?"
i guess he thought he could shame me or something
instead, i was just like "i told you before class i didn't do the reading. why'd you call on me?" and the class started laughing
he was PISSED
i didn't read after about halfway through the first semester and after the first semester i didn't give a shite about my grades. with little effort i was top 25% then went around the firm recruitment circuit and got disgusted at that shite and realized that was the only reason to get good grades. since i didn't want to be part of them, and since i was basically fail-proof, i gave negative fricks

Basically, before Scalise was a Congressman, he spoke at an event 16 years ago hosted by a group headed by David Duke. Supposedly, Scalise had no idea of the connection and simply showed up because he was invited.
This isn't accurate at all. He was invited to speak to a neighborhood group whose president happened to be Kenny Knight who was a David Duke advisor. Immediately after the neighborhood meeting, Knight was holding a conference at the then Sheraton (now Copeland Tower) hotel for the European-American Unity and Rights Organization.
Scalise left immediately after speaking to the neighborhood group which had no connection to the EURO Conference other than Kenny Knight heading both up.
