re: LSU having to deal with a “free speech” versus “hate speech” issue

Code of Conduct means absolutely nothing when compared to the Constitution of the United States. It’s a public institution, it cannot restrict speech covered by that document.

What is hate speech? Thought the Supreme Court said there was no such thing?
Hopefully it stays that way and we don't end up like Canada.

So we shouldn’t send people to prison, we should just let them conform with the rest of society.
Nice analogy dumbass. Saying a racist word isn't a crime, but I guess for you and the SJW crowd, yall would have zero problem criminalizing speech.

Yeps.
How quickly people forget Benjamin Haas and how LSU had to allow him to burn the American flag and rant against America at Free Speech alley. He ultimately didn't do it because of a permit issue but LSU was prepared to allow it for the exact same reason.
Chancellor Martin's statement in 2011:
quote:
Let me make these points clear: I do not condone the burning of the flag but I defend the right for someone to express their freedom of speech by doing so.
article from 2011 about LSU allowing a student to burn US flag

This is no freedom of consequences but there is free speech.
It’s not illegal to be a jerk.
Can’t have laws to enforce stuff off emotion

LSU is a government institution and thus bound by the First Amendment protections for free speech

As deplorable as the guy’s comments were, these are the facts. The other side don’t want to hear it though, so they’ll stomp their feet and blame LSU for something they have no control over

I believe that over the next decade or so you’re going to see this country find a way to limit free speech by passing hate speech legislation under the guise of ridding the country of racism, and this will eventually be applied to other speech like religious speech that they disagree with that speaks against homosexuality. There’s a very real war going on, and the generations coming of age simply do not have the same devotion to the founding principles of this country as previous generations have. Not that there haven’t been deviations from the constitution in the past, because there has, and by the government, but the spirit of strict adherence to the constitution and the tenets of liberty have eroded drastically in my lifetime by the people themselves, and also by their elected officials, and the very constitution our country is founded upon is seen more as a stumbling block in peoples way than a foundation to live our lives upon. There is a big difference in those two mindsets.
Same can be said for the 2nd amendment. It’s all under attack, and at the highest levels of government too. Make no mistake about that.

If LSU kicked out every student who used the magical "N" word, there would be no more black students.

Let the black students “talk some sense in to him”
This was not considered because they couldn't find any black students that used the N word less than the culprit.
Double standards, and whatnot.

This sentiment is actually very racist.
You are implying that Black students would visit violence on him because they are savages incapable of civilized discourse.

It always blows my mind people excuse racism as being a “dumb kid” you know where that “dumb kid” learned his racist ways? His parents. His community. Maybe we should stop excusing dumb kids and maybe people won’t be as willing to teach their kids racism

This is such a myopic view of how the world works.

How do you stop this "hate" speech? There are so many new ways to smear others how do we know this wasn't contrived by those who hate LSU and are jealous of the past football season? This does not reflect on every LSU fan. Not on me that's for sure. Most all people I know know the plight of the Black man. We have come a long way from the hatred bestowed on white people who treat our black friends like they should be treated. It actually hurts some of us to be called racist. If 1 instance from a dumb arse causes a walkout it would be a travesty for those of us who loudly dispise this individual.

So I guess would apply for kids coming from the inner city neighborhoods also??

Even without federal dollars, they are a state school. Kid is completely covered by the first amendment. Kicking him out of school would let the kid collect a nice fat check from LSU for violating a constitutional right.
This is not true. In the past LSU and other universities have discriminated among applicants using essays. They can revoke his admission without fear of a lawsuit.

Even if this kid was walking around campus and videotaped saying that, I doubt there's much the university could do. Sure they could expel him, but it would be challenged in court.

Good times. I remember that vividly as that was my grad school year. I went to support him as flag burning is protected speech but holy hell was there a lot of pissed off rednecks.

Let the dude burn his flag in peace and ignore him. Those idiots gave him the attention he wanted.
Final meme: cancel culture is toxic as frick and needs to end. Ruining this kid's life because he mad a dumb post is a disproportionate response. The double standard is also infuriating as there is tons of hatred from others against white people that is always accepted.
I thought hating someone because of their skin color was bad?

They didn’t have to explain themselves when not admitting someone. They have already accepted this kid and the reason they are removing him is due to speech, it’s completely different. They can make up reasons when denying an application, it’s very clear in this case if they don’t allow him to attend at this point.

Sure but let's not pretend that white people have cornered the market on racism and hatred.
Other groups and races are just as capable of hatred as white people.
To completely ignore and gloss over the hate that some white people experience just for being white shows that those who scream "racism" at every corner aren't really interested in solving the problem but rather furthering the interests of their groups.
So please spare me the lectures until you clean up the hatred in your own community and group first.
