re: LSU could solve a lot of Baton Rouge's problems, if it's leaders had the political will.

Meh, as long as the "right" people are the victims, the Progressives that run our city don't care. This girl is just another number to them, and a small victory as well. She got her privilege checked.

And get labeled as “hate speech” by the mob? The current social climate is that you either praise or say nothing at all.
Yeah frick that. I’ll openly embrace “hate speech” - I hate people like the scum that murdered this girl. I hate the white trash that murdered Kip G. I hate having subhuman filth with no respect for human life surrounding the university I love.

It's not LSU's job to do that. LSU is a university. Its mission is not to do urban renewal. LSU was at its best in some ways in the 1990s. Tuition was relatively cheap and living near campus was cheap. You could live North of Campus on State St or off of Nicholson or live off of Burbank Drive or Tigerland.
Good education at a good price. None of that urban renewal or building apartment complexes for kids from money. All students lived in relatively the same conditions and hung out at the same bars.

LSU spends hundreds of millions of dollars on construction and development. Doing those things around their perimeter to improve the area is 100 percent within their purview.

The out-of-state students paying the full bill are who fund the university.

Lots of things fund the university. But the out-of-state students are the gravy.
That’s what’s happening at Alabama. They have a majority of OOS students and that school looks like the Taj Mahal.

No of my dozens of friends that are LSU alums even let their kids think about going to LSU including me due solely to crime issues.

LSU should've been flexing it's economic and political muscles decades ago to get the area around campus redeveloped, or even straight-up bulldozed.
LSU has spent hundreds of millions of dollars building and expanding. They should have taken in all of the shitty neighborhoods nearby.
This kind of already happened when developers demolished the entire block between State Street and Aster 10-15 years ago.
What should they have done, gone to Roosevelt Street instead? Or Garfield? Or McKinley? Unless they go all the way to North Blvd the hood is still going to be on the border.

The leadership of LSU - not just the chancellor, but the board - carry a lot of weight and influence in Baton Rouge.
The fact that there are not even mild criticisms of the local government, much less the scorched-earth lambasting they deserve, speaks volumes.
There’s plenty to criticize, but the university’s reluctance to do so should not really be a surprise. I mentioned this in one of the traffic threads on tRant - when LSU starts calling out BRPD, you know shite has hit the fan. Why? Because LSU needs BRPD. They rely on BRPD heavily in order to make football Saturdays work. For example, LSU can’t contraflow any roads outside campus without them.
The crime discussion is a bit different but the same principle applies. LSU needs a working relationship with the city and BRPD, so they’re going to be civil - certainly in public, at a minimum.

LSU, OLOL, BASF, Amedisys, Exxon, Shaw and other large organizations share responsibility for the shite hole that Baton Rouge has become.
There should be a DAILY onslaught of criticism from these companies and organizations.
BASF isn’t even in East Baton Rouge Parish, and Shaw doesn’t exist anymore.

This is the PERFECT opportunity for anyone that wants to run for office. Announce your intentions and organize events/rallies. You can rail on the local politicians for hours and hours and be cheered on and get coverage. They deserve every bit of mud you can sling. It will all stick.

The gravy doesn't fund the school.

Enrollment is more than pure numbers. How deep do they have to go down in the applications to fill that number?
Actually, LSU ranks in the top five overall comparatively with other SEC schools as far as acceptance rates, and the average SAT scores are on par with the other conference members.
That said, they need to do a better job of recruiting out of state students.

How exactly does moving people from one shitty neighborhood to another shitty neighborhood solve any problem?
