Put it in your kid's name. When he/she graduates and gets their first home, it's easier to get insured if they kept renters insurance with the same company.

Not really wanting to pay to insure a bunch of shite college furniture but it's a requirement.
Edit: Looks like someone already said almost the exact same thing as me.

Renters is cheap. I paid like $20 a month for 200k worth of coverage. Which was way more than I needed. Covered everything but flooding

Of all the things you are paying for with a college education, it is a thimble of water being dropped into an ocean. Not worth the haggle to work around. Who knows, maybe it will pay off on their last day of college and new furniture will be your grad gift to them!

call your auto insurance carrier and ask for a quote for renters insurance.its less then $100/year, and worth the aggravation if you have a theft, water damage, fire ect.. even covers you if someone sues you for something that happened in apartment

Lemonade or something like that.
Most home owners ins also have a policy.

It’s a requirement for almost all college rentals. A lot of times they have a policy you can just pay them for. You can provide your own but in my daughters experience it was about the same price if 10-12 bucks a month and if you use there’s you don’t have to call or send them any info

Since when did you need renters insurance to squat in Tiger Plaza?

Does homeowner's cover child's belongings at college? (doubtful, but thought I'd ask).
A friend of mine opted out of the coverage then a fire started a few rooms down from his sons apartment.
His son lost the crappy furniture but also a brand new macbook and about $800 with of textbooks.
Probably worth the $15\mo

Seconded. Got a Renters policy for my child’s college house through Lemonade and the process was a few clicks and maybe the cost of a decent dinner. Didn’t really want to pay for it, knew I would likely never use it, but the process and cost didn’t make it painful.

Even when I rented apartments/houses in Memphis from 2006-2014 this was not a thing yet.
I'm required to have a $100,000 policy where I live, and this is an upscale older adult complex where everyone works.

Not saying that you can afford better (not judging either) but if they’re requiring Renter’s Insurance then petty crime, B & E and car theft are probably major issues at that complex.
It is a good practice to have renter's insurance if you aren't judgment proof.

I didn't think it was just the physical property; they want you to get insurance to cover your guests. If they get injured on the property, they could sue the owner. This makes you cover the liability of the guests you invite.

and twice; I should have read them all.

If getting this for a family member, your HO policy may already cover your college students away from home for liability and contents. They can send you a statement to that effect with the limits info, and it costs you nothing extra. Alternatively, you can get an endorsement added to your HO policy for about $60. I have done both.

You're underestimating the human, especially college kids, penchant for arse frickery and what it can cost from a liability standpoint.
