Most O&G upstream jobs in Louisiana (Lafayette) are offshore in nature. The increased activity in O&G has been primarily land based West Texas etc. It's cheaper to produce on land.

Louisiana O&G is disproportionately offshore BAWS.

All the technical stuff is in Houston.

Not inland, not on the shelf and not offshore.

Deepwater is hanging on somewhat

Only O&G that’s up is on land.

Lie some on resume. Everyone does. Don't be ridiculous but just embellish some.

My mistake out of school was being way too honest.

Even worse when you think it is nearly 50% higher than the national average.

I honestly don't understand how this is possible. O&G is up and nationally unemployment and labor participation are at record highs.it would make more sense if gas was in the shitter or something. In any event, that is a really bad sign.

The shale plays are in Texas and Louisiana is mostly good for offshore work at the moment. It is picking up and companies are hiring but having trouble getting people back.

Just graduated ME.

I tried getting a couple of entry-level engineering jobs at a lumber mill and paper mill. I have a forestry degree and a ME degree. Still couldn't get one. Their requirements are that you had to have worked as an engineer at a lumber or paper mill for 2+ years to get an entry-level job. Who comes up with this shite?

Louisiana just sucks for jobs. I could go one state over, get a job much easier, and get paid better with the same job title

I am just blaming the governor for raising taxes while the state is in recession.

I'm blaming him for expanding govt. and committing the state to more sending.

I'm just blaming Edwards for not reforming nursing home rules, weening the state off the film welfare program, and for not making cuts to NGOs.

Did you go to LSU?

CEO of International Paper was an ME from LSU. That company hired a lot LSU and Miss State engineering and business grads around the time I graduated 10-12 years ago. I bet they still do if you are up for moving to Memphis or the Midwest.

Houston is pretty hard to avoid for Louisiana grads. I hope you expanded your search there.

Good luck, Hammertime.

I don't know where these Louisiana companies plan on getting their picture perfect employees, but it sure as shite isn't here

In IT, wages are very low around Baton Rouge and New Orleans. There are a steady stream of graduates with not a lot of jobs. A lot want to stay. Most will have to leave.

Same industry. I actually make about what I would in Houston in BR but if I lost my job tomorrow there'd only be 3-4 companies in the city that would pay me what I make now. I'd leave if I needed to though.

And with all the on land plays that are opened up, it may be a very long time before offshore is viable. I have several clients in various service industries from boats to supply companies, and none of them are optimistic.

There's no way those percentages are accurate for this area. However, just looking at the color plot on the map, I'd say it's somewhat accurate.

Anyway, it kind of proves his point.

Massive tax increase, migration out of La. and you see the result.

The migration angle is more significant than people think.

Look at the numbers and you see stated that Lafayette lost jobs but the unemployment rate in Lafayette dropped. How do you explain that? Labor participation rates, migration, or a combo of the 2. I suspect migration is more significant, several people I know have moved because their jobs moved. Often a spouse also moved who had a job (usually lower paying) elsewhere, opening up a job for someone. So the number of jobs drops but the unemployment numbers also drop.
