Shameful. The church should stand up an say that their employees should all be mandated reporters. Confession boo5h or otherwise.

The case involves a young woman who claims she told a Baton Rouge-area Catholic priest that a longtime church parishioner was sexually abusing her when she was 14 but the priest did nothing to stop or report the alleged abuse.

This case was about the sanctity of the confessional. Crappy thread title and OP.

I am sure you can't grasp the danger of allowing the government to put restrictions on our religious freedom.

There's a twist worthy of a Shamalan movie.

It's the 5th Amendment right against self incrimination

Don't get all high and mighty about this, cause you're gonna find yourself on the wrong side. This is about accountability and protecting kids not some religious freedom bullshite. I doubt you'd be quick to defend the practice of female circumcision in the name of religious freedom.

Religious tolerance is great within reason, when you find yourself defending people's ability to hurt kids, you're not within reason.

A priest has to take the 5th when someone else is abusing a child?

This is about kids who tell priests that someone is raping them, and the priests do nothing. Teachers, social workers, and many others are mandated to report this kind of shite.

Correct me if I'm wrong but a psychologist has an obligation to share protected information if the client is a danger to themselves or others, right? How is this different?

This is the EXACT same argument they use when they try to curtail the 2nd Amendment.

You're kidding right? Is there a high capacity magazine that's covering up child rape?

Fwiw, I'm in kind of agreement with the ruling. Certain people, usually government workers, are mandatory reporters. My wife is one. I don't think it should be extended to clergy. But! Who the hell wants a spiritual leader that would not report any type of child abuse to the police?

ETA: and to act like there aren't already government restrictions on religious freedom is asinine.

This is why I said the church should go ahead and mandate, but they won't
