First privilege has to do with whether something is admissible as evidence. You are looking to discuss the lawyer's duty of confidentiality.

As to confidentiality the Model Rules of Professional conduct provide,

quote:

(b) A lawyer may reveal information relating to the representation of a client to the extent the lawyer reasonably believes necessary:

(1) to prevent reasonably certain death or substantial bodily harm;


Each state may vary somewhat, but the general gist is that an attorney can (and in some states MUST) report information of this type.

Source. Speaking as an attorney, I sure as shite am using this authority to its very broadest to prevent any kids being abused.
