Health care costs in the U.S. have steadily increased over time. For instance, Americans’ average annual out-of-pocket health care spending has risen from $811 to $1,514 over the past two decades, outpacing inflation.

To identify where residents spend the largest share of their income on health care, WalletHub analyzed the prices of five key health care components across all 50 states, then combined those costs and compared them with each state’s median household income.

Cost of Healthcare as a share of median monthly household income

The only other Deep South state ahead of Louisiana is Mississippi, sitting at number 4. Alaska was number 1, with its residents spending just over 10% of their income on healthcare.

Louisiana residents are spending around 8.13% of their income on healthcare, according to WalletHub’s data ranking.

In a report published late last year, two Louisiana cities, Baton Rouge and New Orleans, were among the top 10 nationwide where people spent the most amount of their income on healthcare. WalletHub reported that health care services in Baton Rouge cost around 9.01% of the median household income, while costs in New Orleans were around 9.28% of the median income.

There was that billboard that said that more than half of them have hiv which I’m sure we pay for

It’s sad that they’ve basically cured a disease caused by doing drugs and having sex with the wrong people called aids but doctors and the pharmaceutical companies won’t lift a finger to help innocent hangover sufferers

AI Overview
The United States spends the most on healthcare in the world, both per capita and as a share of its economy.
The U.S. spends over per person on healthcare. This is more than double the average of other high-income nations and accounts for roughly of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
By comparison, the next highest-spending countries, such as Switzerland and Germany, spend roughly half that amount per person (between \$9,300 and \$10,000). The primary drivers of the massive U.S. spending are the significantly higher prices for medical services, administrative complexity, and pharmaceutical costs, rather than a higher volume of doctor visits

People complain about costs and complain about how much money others make.

Well we pay our nurses and doctors more than anywhere in the world, but you don't see people complaining about that.

When I was in the ER with my dad a few weeks ago they brought in an OD that they had to use two doses of narcan on, an old guy with untreated heart failure who was short of breath, and a prisoner from the local jail, for what reason I don't know. This was in a couple of hours in a small rural hospital in BFE. They said it had slowed down quite a bit from earlier in the day.

I think doctors and nurses should be paid even more. Insurance company CEO's, Big Pharma advertising executives, etc. not so much.

Says perhaps as much or more about income as it does healthcare costs!

The math just doesn’t add up re: limiting insurance company CEO pay

You could put it at $0 and it would “save” the average person Pennies at best

The biggest driver of health insurance cost is hospital monopoly pricing and labor costs (Baumol’s cost disease)

FWIW, I pay through my company almost $600 a check (me, wife, and kids) which is 26 x’s a year. $15,600 in health insurance premiums is dam high.

Because we subsidize a lot of lazy fricks that survive on Little Debbies and Kool-Aid.
