People are going to have to be open to short term taxes to repay this. The problem is no one will believe they are short term and I don't have an answer for that. The other thing is some really long term bonds need to be issued while rates are so low. Like 100 year notes.

I believe it’s last time to begin the reopen but I’m not ready to support a full open including festivals, packed Bourbon Street or anything else that can cause a quick spike like Mardi Gras because that will cause a backlash that shuts things down completely again.
When is a good time for you people?

August when schools go back and college students are traveling all across the country? Middle of football season? If not then, why would sooner be any worse than now? What does June or July have the May doesn’t? Or do you want us to still be in the middle of a phased approach until next spring???

It's about money. The longer we are ordered to stay at home, the more pressing our need for federal money. We need that money to fill the fiscal hole the state is in. Are these Republicans willing to raise sales and/or income taxes to do it? This state likes to talk big about budget cuts, but don't dare cut TOPs or stop giving money to the Saints, etc.

Well it’s about 2 different sources of money. Staying shut down might keep federal dollars flowing but will put small businesses completely under. La looks too much to the short term solutions of federal dollars and not enough to long term solutions of creating and supporting solid employment. This state can’t survive if the taxpayers stop paying taxes because they aren’t employed.

Do they know he is simply using the White House guidelines? It's two more weeks. Geez. No one is paying attention to it any way

Schools/camps are. The sooner we get the ball rolling, the sooner camps will commit to being open this summer.

Lafourche Parish
@LafourcheGov
President Chaisson shared his decision to issue a new Executive Order, which opens non-essential businesses not expressly prohibited in Governor John Bel Edwards Executive Order.

This is assuming that the only thing stopping festivals and large gatherings is the EO.

I think it’s more palatable to the average joe to open up 2 weeks at a time and addressing any case increases as we go (more testing, hot spot, etc). Any spikes that occur with a sudden, 100% reopen, regardless of reason, will spook a large part of the population and the backlash will be some form of shutting down again. But the next reopen would be much, much slower.

If something isn’t done, JBE will keep extending the order every few weeks.
He suffers not one bit by people not being allowed to work.

Sounds like Lafourche is on the Lafayette plan.

If you think that a large event like a festival or a sport game can be scheduled and put together in a 6 week period, I don’t know what to tell you.

It’s about a strategy to prevent giving the ball back to people who want it closed down forever.

Oil and gas is in the shitter. Casinos have been shuttered for 45 days. The tourism industry is gone for the near future. Louisiana's financial outlook is horrible. Our only hope is for D.C. to keep sending us money.

That 60 day stopgap would work just fine.

My kid's baseball league scheduled games for Friday night anticipating the governor reopening the state yesterday. There are easily over 2,000 people at the park on Friday nights.

They did that in six hours and with only the hopes of it being allowed.

He's already making plans to go at least until the last week of May.
