Neat neighborhoods with very little crime, hard working people.
I grew up in a rural suburb north of BR. It was very much like you described. Parts of it are still like that but it's far more like a traditional suburb now than when I was a kid.

Agreed. Loved it when I lived there. Would love to live there again. Louisianans (on this board) are self-haters. It’s very weird.

Depends on where. I have zero desire to ever live there again. Not because I’m a self loather type. It’s got a ton of good qualities to offer, but when it comes to traffic, education, crime, horrific infrastructure, job opportunity, extremely corrupt politicians running the biggest cities into the ground (namely Baton Rouge) and generally being a good place to raise children? It sucks. But it’s got some of the best food, culture (not to be confused with culcha) and people in the world.

I'm in my 40s now but it was a pretty rural area in the 80s. My grandparents had a small farm and 48 acres out there. My lived in a neighborhood but only a mile away from them.

I'm 38 from Zachary.
When we moved there in 82, it had two things: a Danny's Fried Chicken and the Hospital.

I don't mind the weather in South Louisiana other than June through September. It's usually fairly pleasant the other 8 months of the year.

Louisiana is cool if you aren’t poor and can get a job here. A lot of people have to move to Texas just to find a job

Most of my family have lived in Louisiana all their lives, made a good living and retired. I chose to move back after retiring from the Air Force in 2013. During my career, I’ve been stationed in places that are way worse and others that were better. It didn’t matter because I tried to make the best of both. I actually like Baton Rouge because of LSU football and baseball, tailgating, being able to run downtown, along the river, around the Lakes, through the LSU campus and a lot of other reasons.

Grade school here. But the Super Walmart opened when I was in high school and it was a huge deal.
I mean, the building colors were blue! And they had food products! No more shopping at Winn-Dixie for food, and Wal-Mart for non-food items!
Yes, younger people. Used to be you had to go to two different types of stores to do your shopping list.

A lot of people that rag Louisiana are from out of state but come here to work because they can’t find work in their state.
Worked with a guy from up around St. Louis that would drive back and forth every 7 days. Would always bad mouth Louisiana. But he’d make that road trip back and forth every week.

I traveled the country for work for a decade, from big cities to small towns. I've been to 47 states and there are plenty of places that I've been that I'd live in South Louisiana over.
