I'm glad you know my politics better than me. Please point out anything I've said that leads to more government interference in citizens lives. In fact I am arguing for less of a criminal justice system; you just don't want to hear it. Sending people to jail for minor crimes is gonna fix things though! At some point it will magically result in a smaller prison population.
I believe in property rights, but if you seriously think that reducing the impact of shoplifting a pair of jeans is some huge affront to property rights then your priorities are very messed up.

The crime being, in a large number of cases, the desire to smoke a joint or a bowl. But lock 'em up by all means.
You want to back that up with some statistics?
Every night i watch the news a black guy shoots, stabs, and/or robs someone, but there isn't the mention of him smoking a joint while doing it.

The people who blame drugs for the prison problem amuse me. They act like legalizing them will fix the issue associated with drugs. We will still have burglaries because the same people who can't afford drugs now will still not be able to afford them if they are legal. There will still be robberies and murders.
What will happen to all the drug dealers? I guess they think they will become model citizens also and will get real jobs

two out of three of these issues can be fixed without any larger outside influence; simple family involvement is all that's needed. I came from a very poor, very uneducated family, but they weren't willfully ignorant. I worked my arse off starting at 13 years old, paid my way through college (I lost my scholarships because I didn't handle the new freedoms of college life well) and now have a stable job, a home bigger than I ever thought I would live in, and a secure retirement that doesn't require a SS check each month. And guess what? I never felt the need to commit any crime along the way. This is a culture/family values issue, not one of suppression.

We should start caning instead.
quote:
Singaporean law allows caning to be ordered for over 30 offences, including hostage-taking, robbery, gang robbery with murder, drug use, vandalism, and rioting. Caning is also a mandatory punishment for certain offences such as rape, drug trafficking, illegal money-lending, and for visiting foreigners who overstay their visa by more than 90 days, a measure designed to deter illegal immigrant workers.
Prison is like a timeout for adults. Sure, it works for some in the beginning, but eventually a thorough arse whipping is what really sets the tone for acceptable behavior.

What I'm trying to tell you is there is no good solution. Reducing sentences isn't really going to help people who don't give a shite about being productive members of society.

Sure we can agree that this problem is never going to go away entirely without massive cultural/societal changes. That doesn't mean we should continue the same policies that put us in this position in the first place.

To summarize this thread(and most of the OT/Politic threads):
"Everyone who aint a healthy conservative straight white protestant male is evil, derpity durrrrrrrrrrr muh taxes are too high!!!!!!!!!!"

Prison is the end game of those policies. Fix the other problems first and see what occurs.

So they don't support each other, help each other, teach each other, claim responsibility for themselves, and won't stop killing/robbing each other, because a 3rd party keeps them "down"?

I am not going to go to bat for the BLM and the SJW of the world. However you are insane to think the problems with the black community aren't derived from Jim Crow/slavery.

Growing up in a culture where you are pretty much tagged as a criminal or disruptive force just because of your skin color doesn't really lead to long term integration, acceptance, and success.
This thread is proof positive of the difficulties blacks face in the South to this day. So yeah, their culture and community has been destroyed by decades of segregation, intolerance and prejudice. Much of which still exists today.
Then people want to act superior because "black culture failed" (which it has) and "it is their fault" (really only in part). It has to be one of the most hypocritical things I've ever seen.

I'm already predicting that we will en met with "de-segregation destroyed the black merchant class" or "Irish people succeeded."
I'm far from a BLM protestor and SJW, but racism from blacks and whites is a venom that eats away at this country.

Yeah we definitely lock you up here.
We don't need anyone else in there for marijuana that's for sure. Wish Kasich was running this state.
