New car technology is going to take care of this for the most part in the next decade. Auto collision warning, autobraking, side and rear collision alerts are amazing

They are amazing, until you have to have them repaired from a collision. New technology in vehicles is one of the major factors in repair costs skyrocketing.

I wonder how much of this is a function of having such high insurance rates. If insurance rates dropped would more people buy insurance or policies that are more comprehensive?

It's probably because LA houses a very large population of government check recipients and they have better things to do than to buy insurance.

I was really surprised how much cheaper my car insurance became when I moved to Virginia

same here, I just moved to NC. Same coverage, same vehicles...my policy is half of what it was in LA.

The reason you have uninsured motorist it to pay for uninsured cars. If you are hit by someone without insurance it will cover YOUR damages.

UM pays for underinsured also. It pays for pain and suffering, loss of wages, death, and UM property damage can be added if you do not carry comp. Your liability coverage covers the other car, not yours. Your collision covers your veh minus the deductible. It does not cover your pain, injuries, or economic loss.

If you do not pay the extra bit for uninsured motorist in your policy you are taking a huge gamble in LA.

Uninsured motorist is a huge insurance company scam in most instances. What do you think it covers? Because most people don't know. It covers bodily injury. You know what else covers bodily injury? The health insurance you already have. In fact, health insurance will kick in first and the uninsured will only kick in if your health policy doesn't cover. Ask your car insurance agent about this next time they try to tack that onto your bill. Uninsured also allegedly covers damages for personal injury but good luck getting your own insurance company to give you a substantial pain and suffering payout.

Now UNDERinsured motorist might be of interest to those driving an especially expensive vehicle but even that is unlikely. Your policy would come in after the other guys and only then would underinsured start.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Anyone driving without Uninsured Motorist is nuts. It's critical option no one should pass up.

If you have full coverage on your vehicle, if someone hits you, if they are insured or not, your vehicle will be fixed.

Someone tried to sell me on it by saying it's needed if you DONT have medical insurance or something but that would be the only small amount of value it could add, which isn't much.... it's a scam like extended warranties from a dealership

, my SIL sells auto insurance for several companies and straight up told me it's they thh states insurance commissioner is in bed with insurance companies and that for the most part uninsured motorist is a joke but a ton of people that don't understand it think they HAVE to absolutely have it although they aren't getting really any extra coverage anywhere if they have adequate health insurance...

People in Louisiana have newer cars on average which have higher repair costs due to technological changes which are expensive. All those floods wipe out cars every year hence once of the major contributors is new car purchases.

I was thinking the same thing. It's not people driving a car from within the last 5 or so years, it's the addict asswipes who drive a clunker from 1999.
