He is a master of naming characters. Some of the best names ever. Clete Purcell, Della Landry, Johnny Dartez, Minos Dauterive, Sonny Boy Marsalis, Baptiste, and, of course, Bubba Roque.

He's got a series with a baw named Billy Bob Holland, who's basically Robicheaux in Montana. I've also read a book or two where he sends Dave and Clete up there to fish and they predictably fall into a murderous ring of ruffians that the have to bust up while bumbling around, and eventually save the day.

IIRC the Billy Bob Holland series was set in west Texas and across the border. Kinda reminded me of the Corman MacCarthy trilogy abt that area.

I like him. Probably read or heard all of books. The ones he co wrote with the Montana series was pretty decent. Maybe Clete is my favorite. And Tripod.

I have tried to read a couple of his books several years ago. I found his style not to my taste.

His earlier books were great. He brought his politics in with his later books which kind of dampened things a bit but I like his style of writing and historical flashbacks. Sometimes too I can’t decide if he loves or hates our state.
