Graves, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, says he knew his request would draw attention. But he also knew it would make a point or two, Roll Call reports.

Critics of Graves’ earmark say it would take funding away from other necessary projects, but Graves and Louisiana officials say the new bridge, which has been in talks for years, is too costly for the state to fund itself and is critical to U.S. commerce.

Unlikely to get funded, but would be damn nice to get any of these options:

Option 4 is my favorite (and the OT's if memory serves), but Option 5 works too if they can't do Option 4.

But I will take any of them at this point.

It'll never happen. Let's stop talking about it.

I hope they can keep it in there.

They said that about the Audubon Bridge too. But it's sitting there with almost no traffic on it.

It will never be done in time... and sure as hell won’t be under budget.

$1b to cover studies for the next 10 years? I don’t think that will be enough.

There's two major bridges that have a possibility of being funded in the latest bill. The one in Lake Charles and the one in Baton Rouge.

Both are needed ASAP.

Wouldn't that put it right through the east side of Dow Chemical? That one doesn't make sense to me.

I mean, kudos if they can make it work. But I don't know how they'd route that.

I've given Graves lots of shite over the years, but credit to him on this one.

The lack of a direct east-west right of way link to I-10 will make this a traffic nightmare for BlueBonnet/Siegen,

You can't expect all of it to get funded all at once, and the route to I-10 will depend on the bridge placement. Just because it's not show on this project map doesn't mean there isn't a way to do it.

My guess...

A vastly expanded LA30 is probably going to be the main route on the east bank. West bank probably needs a whole new highway to link up to I-10.

Sure would help game day traffic; and could be great to have an alternative when the bridge is backed up.

How does this take commuter or thru traffic off the MRB?

Seems like it would be a hell of an economic development boon for Sunshine and Plaquemine but not effective in taking baws off the main bridge

I don't see how any of these routes WOULDN'T take some traffic of the I-10/LA1 area at the bridge. Plaquemine is home to the largest employers on the west bank by far. Pretty much any of these routes would take some of the load off of I-10/LA1 interchange.

I-10 sees more traffic on a daily basis than the I-40 bridge in Memphis (now closed) sees in 5 days. A huge part of that is truck and commuter traffic to the plants on the west bank. Just getting 10% or 20% of that moved elsewhere would be HUGE.

Not to mention that the new bridge would be an excellent pressure relief valve when things tie up on I-10 in Baton Rouge because of an accident or something. Or if they ever have to shut it down for emergency repairs like they did to the one in Memphis.

Option 1 seems to have the most obstacles to connecting with a highway network on the eastern side of the river.

I would fully support that option. St. Gabriel PD would be driving Ferraris after their speed trap revenue boost.

They would need to bypass the Tanger Outlet stuff though

I think the primary route to I-10 would be LA30. If you’re already on LA30, whether around Gardere or St. Gabriel, that would be the fastest route to Gonzales or anywhere east of Gonzales. Anyone driving up Bluebonnet/Siegen is probably trying to get somewhere in EBR or (maybe) Livingston.

I think ideally you place the bridge somewhere with the potential for a future controlled-access route to I-10, but I wouldn’t say it’s critical to have that route in place from day 1.
