On a ski trip back in Jan AA lost our luggage and due to snow they couldn't deliver it for about 3 days. On or around day 2 a rep from AA told us to buy whatever we needed and the airline would reimburse us up to $3500 per ticketed passenger. For our family of 3 that's more than $10k.
Having nothing more than a name and a phone number it takes a bit of faith to trust that their word would be honored.
We had spare clothes packed in the carry ons and we had already rented ski clothes through the resort.
Still after what we needed to buy, there was a lot of that $10k left to spend.
Anyone else experience this?
Anyone go on a shopping spree, add to the wardrobe or buy and sell on eBay?

I would tread lightly - I have experienced lost luggage with a offer of about $200. I hope it works out. Maybe post this on travel bd.

Probably not since that's the epitome of white trash. I would've MAYBE done that when I was 12

I'm going to need pictures of your wife before I can accurately gauge the situation.

AA lost my luggage last year on a trip. I just went to Walmart and spent $75 on some throw away clothes until they could get my bag to me 3 days later. Delivered to my hotel.

I never asked for anything but an "I'm sorry"

Sounds trashy

Lufstania air lost my luggage when I was traveling to Croatia to go sailing. I had to go to the mall and buy clothes as soon as I landed because we were getting on the boat so I couldn't get my luggage until we got back in a week. I submitted all of the receipts to them and they mailed me a check

ETA: Wasn't anywhere near $3500 though. Only a few bathing suits, flip flops, t-shirts, 2-3 nice pants/shirts

United ruined my travel golf case/bag and my golf bag last year. They went and looked up my exact bags and reimbursed me full retail price. It took 2 months and many phone calls to get a check from them. They also gave me a voucher for the headache.

Like I said the trip was in Jan., and we were somewhat conflicted about what to do. We had to buy toiletries, bought some clothes for going out to dinner. Not much more than we would have bought anyway.
Overall we spent a little over $1k.
They did send us a check that we got in the mail yesterday, maybe 3 weeks after we mailed them all the receipts.
They did not refund the sales tax which wasn't a big deal but had we spent $10k it would've added up.
At the time we didn't know whether our luggage was ever going to be returned and there was reason to think it was gone gone.
Being that we had 5 nights of nice place sort of dinner reservations we had packed some nice clothes. There was certainly reason to go out and spend the max if a significant part of your wardrobe was lost forever.
It just seemed like a roll of the dice.

Had a radar detector jacked out of our checked luggage. After many phone calls, submitted our tickets, receipts, and quote to replace the radar detector, they reimbursed full price to buy a new one. Took about a month and a half to actually get it all sorted out.
