Looks like you will have higher electric rates due to data centers

We of course knew this.
Of course, Meta and Entergy say this is false.
Louisiana is losing population. Businesses are closing. They are using less power not more.
The only entities causing more power demand is large industrial customers… so let them pay for it.
quote:
Entergy Louisiana’s plans to buy a gas-fired power plant for $1.8 billion are drawing concerns from a consultant for the state’s Public Service Commission, who recently warned in a report that the plant is unreliable and needed mostly because of Meta’s massive north Louisiana data center. If approved, the acquisition would cost Entergy Louisiana’s average residential customer roughly $8 a month, according to documents Entergy filed in the case.
Of course, Meta and Entergy say this is false.
quote:
He added that Entergy has been projecting capacity deficits starting in 2027 since well before Meta announced plans for its data center here. He pointed to the company’s 2023 resource plan, initially filed in 2021, which did not mention Cottonwood by name but forecast a 510 megawatt energy shortfall in 2027, growing to more than 5,000 megawatts in the 2040s. “No single customer is driving this acquisition,” he said. “This facility is the best option for all Louisiana customers. The demand for power across the state has accelerated consistently and significantly for a number of years — from the needs of residential customers to larger projects in LNG, steel and other industrial and petrochemical development across the state.”

Have you met the elected officials in LA?

Georgia has data centers popping up all over the place too. And our rates are actually going down.
Leadership and infrastructure matter.
LA needs a big new clean safe nuke plant. Start now, and you may have one online in 30 years.

Texas getting one with water scarce

Just an asinine statement. Louisiana and Georgia both have two nuclear power plants. It's not that. It's Louisiana politics as Entergy takes advantage of the state at every turn.

My asinine statement included, and actually lead with, "leadership matters."

Dude, you said that La should build a plant and it will be ready in 30 years.
I'll give you the leadership angle as that is the issue.

Computer [component] prices are now jacked up too.

So, under your logic, we should oppose *any* new economic development on the grounds that it will increase demand for electricity?

I don't like talking politics, but when a natural resource is massively consumed/taxed (not the money tax) and drained by one company and everyone that doesn't benefit pays, that's not a great thing.

LA's most modern Nuke plant went online literally 40 years ago.
Georgia's went online 2 years ago. Not only very modern, safer, and more efficient, it's the largest in the USA.
We aren't comparing apples to apples here.
Nothing in my statement was asinine.
You must just be grouchy because something unrelated to me pissed you off today.

Nothing about that is asinine.
It took GA 15 years for Vogtle. Saying it would take LA 30 years isn't "asinine".

If it increases cost on all customers if a utility, yes

So why do yall keep putting corrupt morons in office? It’s kinda hard to sympathize with people in LA when it comes to poltics. Yall only have yourselves to blame at this point.

I agree and it's why LA is losing it's "brain trust."

Just a side note, coal plants have been closing at a fast rate since 2010 (290 plants closed from 2010 to May 2019; this was 40% of the US's coal generating capacity).

quote:Yes. Georgia Power will not go to their Public Service Commission until the data center guarantees bring down customer rates.

I wish Entergy had that mind set.

Are you referring to Vogtle? Unit 3 and 4 ended up being $20 billion over budget. Georgia Power increased their rates to pay for the costs overruns because they only budgeted $14 billion.

No, but increasing the rates for residential customers because of a data center’s consumption is ridiculous. Make meta (or whomever owns the data center) pay premium rates.
