Two sisters were killed early today, and their parents injured, in what authorities said appears to possibly be a DUI-related crash.

Alabama State Troopers identified the fatality victims as Niomi Deona James, 11, and Jayla Latrice Parler, 13. The driver of the vehicle that struck them has been charged with murder.

The accident happened at 2:50 a.m. on U.S. 82 near the 65 mile marker, 10 miles east of Tuscaloosa, said Senior Trooper Reginal King.

Niomi and Jayla, both of Brent, were passengers in a 2015 Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta was struck by a 2015 Chrysler 300 driven by 59-year-old James Halsell Jr. of Huntsville.

James Donald Halsell, Jr. (born September 29, 1956), is a retired United States Air Force officer and a former NASA astronaut. He is a veteran of five Space Shuttle missions. He has been quoted as saying he loves floating in zero gravity and watching the earth from space. "It's amazing to hold a handful of Skittles and watch them float away from you," Halsell has said.

Halsell was born and raised in West Monroe, Louisiana and attended the United States Air Force Academy. After training as a test pilot, he worked on F-4, F-16 and SR-71 aircraft. Halsell was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1990 and was trained as a Space Shuttle pilot. He piloted missions STS-65 (1994) and STS-74 (1995), and commanded missions STS-83, STS-94 (1997) and STS-101 (2000).

Did alcohol cause the wreck, or did he just happen to have alcohol in his system?

Until we can prove that it was the alcohol itself that caused him to crash, and not just a coincidence, we should reserve judgment.

There should not be strict liability for people who just happen to drive with alcohol in their system. Some can handle it and some cannot.

I guarantee you a pilot/astronaut with 40 years of drinking experience can handle his liquor and it wasn't necessarily the cause of this terrible accident.

But people will blindly say drunk drivers kill indiscriminately.

AS if to accentuate your point, the very next post

Yes, because every DUI is the same. Someone driving at .30 and .08 are guilty of the same heinous crime. There is no difference whatsoever.

The ability to see issues outside of black and white seems to be a major issue for a very large segment of the public.

In this day and age with Uber there is no excuse to drive drunk.

There is the exact same rationale for driving after consuming alcohol as there always has been. You're not calling an Uber if you are at a buddy's house on Sunday watching a game and have a few beers.

If someone plans on going out and getting hammered, then of course, there is no excuse for not planning for a way home. But there isn't Uber everywhere, Uber isn't always feasible during major events, and there a infinite other numbers of variables that can come into play for why someone ends up behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

Again, to suggest that because Uber exists in some places that there is no scenario in which a person should be put in position to drive with alcohol in their system is a delusional/ignorant over simplification.

Well, he (and the victims) were on the road at nearly three in the morning so maybe it was just lack of sleep.

That does make it interesting. It very well could have been.

Ridiculous just because someone has alcohol in their system that is assumed to be the cause of any negative actions.

Some people are able to drink steadily throughout the day and have no issues.
