}}}Did alcohol cause the wreck, or did he just happen to have alcohol in his system?

Until we can prove that it was the alcohol itself that caused him to crash, and not just a coincidence, we should reserve judgment.

There should not be strict liability for people who just happen to drive with alcohol in their system. Some can handle it and some cannot.

I guarantee you a pilot/astronaut with 40 years of drinking experience can handle his liquor and it wasn't necessarily the cause of this terrible accident.

But people will blindly say drunk drivers kill indiscriminately.{{{

I don't even have the words. Could truly be the most ridiculous thing I've read on Tigerdroppings.
Wait, you are kidding , right?

Have you ever gotten behind the wheel of a car after you drank a little?

Not going to lie; I have when I was a stupid young man. but for you to seem to shrug off the fact that this man killed two young girls is just mind blowing.

Horrific tragedy ftr. Many different scenarios could have played out there so I'll reserve judgement but def prayers for all those involved. Lives forever changed....

If I was you I'd do as little as possible to bump this thread for fear of more people seeing you're asinine post on the first page.

I mean my grandpa has drank pretty heavily for 50 years and he still can get drunk and would be a huge liability behind the wheel.

I honestly don't care if you're driving drunk or simply recklessly - if you're carelessness causes the death of two people in something was totally preventable, you suffer the consequences.

what does this have to do with anything? ANYONE that drinks and gets behind the wheel and kills two people is a tPOS that needs to be dealt with harshly. Be it you, me, or Jesus.

I think that's what Womski is trying to say here.... Let's wait to see IF alcohol actually caused the wreck before passing judgement here. Theoretically speaking the astronaut bro could've been tossed but cruising in his lane and was hit head on by the carload of people... That's all.

If any alcohol is in your system and someone dies it's an automatic charge these days right?

They believe it was alcohol and speeding on behalf of the astronaut. If it is either one he deserves to be charged.

Perhaps, and if so, it is understandable since even the "best" drunks in the world aren't as sharp with high levels of alcohol in their system.

That's what I'm saying we don't know if alcohol played a role in the accident; did he crash because he was impaired, or was it a terrible accident that would have happened regardless and he just so happened to have alcohol in his system.

I personally have a hard time believing an astronaut couldn't handle his liquor behind the wheel of a car that operates on 2 axes.

To give some perspective....
quote:

More than 50 percent of fatal crashes involve an alcohol-impaired driver
More than 65 percent of fatal single car accidents are alcohol-related
•Over 36 percent of auto accidents involving a pedestrian list the pedestrian as being alcohol- impaired
•The average blood alcohol content of drivers arrested for driving while impaired is .2 percent – more than double the legal limit
•Approximately 10 percent of motorists on the road between 7pm and 3am are legally impaired
•People between 16 and 24 years old cause 42 percent of fatal drug- and alcohol-related car accidents
•Over 80 percent of Americans admit to having driven after drinking
•Roughly 50 percent of Americans can expect to be involved in an alcohol-related car accident during their lifetime

LINK

So how many people are we talking about her that are killed annually by drunk drivers? Well, let's look at the total number of people killed the last several years on the highways in the US.

2006: 42,708 (so about 20,000 due to drinking & driving)
2007: 41,259 (again roughly 20,000)
2008: 37,423 (close to 20,000 again)
2009: 33,883 (between 15,000 - 20,000)
2010: 32,999 (between 15,000 - 20,000)
2011: 32,479 (roughly 15,000)
2012: 33,561 (roughly 15,000 again)
2013: 32,791 (still hovering around 15,000)
2014: 32,275 (still about 15,000)
(2014 is the last year with figures) ( LINK)

So if roughly 50% of all traffic deaths are due to drunk driving, between 2006 and 2014 roughly 154,000 men, women, and children died on our countries roads due to drunk driving. Think about that number. 154,000 people dead all because someone decided to drive impaired.

Anyone here still think the drunk driving problem in this country is overblown?

What Womski said is how the law in many states will look at the accident too. Lady Justice will want to know if the alcohol was a proximate cause of the accident.

Our class taked to this dude from space one time, and he must have spoken at every high school event my senior year. I saw the headline and was floored. "Murder " seems to imply intent. Maybe the laws in Alabama are different, but wouldn't this be 2 counts of vehicular homicide? Doesn't make it any less tragic or any less his fault, but there is a much different narrative if this was a drunk accident or he was drunk and ran them down with his car on purpose.
