Get a Dorkie, best dog I've ever owned. I've never trained mine to do anything he just knows. It's like he understands English.

Giant Schnauzer if you are wanting a larger breed. They are great dogs and don't shed either. If you're looking for a small dog, the Minature version is just as good.

I've had two German Shepherds. Best dogs I've had by far. Both had a great temperament and were great with guests once they were introduced. Both loved kids too, one thought she was my brother's babysitter when he was just starting to crawl and walk around the house
Both dogs have been vey intimidating to people we don't know though. For instance, at our old house Cox had their cable box in the backyard. As long as we had our shepherd, no Cox guy was ever going in our yard unannounced
But again they were very friendly once introduced. I also found they were very receptive to training and learned very easily. Not to mention German Shepherds are beautiful dogs, much better looking than the others you suggested. Germans are the type of the dog that other people will be jealous of

I know many have said shelter dog already, but I just want to add that even if you are looking for a specific breed to check a shelter first. I have a beautiful golden lab who is a rescue.

German Shepherd - requires some proper training to get full affect. A different buddy sent his off to some dog camp for 6 weeks and when it came back, it would try to attack anyone not a part of the family.
In my experience, Germans are very receptive to training on your own. I don't think it's necessary to turn one into an attack dog, just teach it discipline, a set of commands, how you want it to sleep, play, etc. I also teach them to be friendly with guests after being introduced, but to bark before then. No one is going to come into your house with a German there because it'll make itself known before they can try to get inside

All you people spending money on these purebred dogs.
The man needs to get a rescue that needs a home. It'll only cost $75-100 and the dog will be the happiest it's ever been.

We are on our third Weimaraner over the past 30 years. When people tell me they want one I always tell them to find someone who has a 6 month old and borrow for a weekend. High energy pup that will take lots of patience.
Once they turn 2, they settle down. It is a very loyal, protective breed and becomes part of the family. All ours have lived indoors and slept on the bed with the kids or with us.
We have a doggy door so coming and going is no problem.

American Bully Pitbull for the win! Go with a classic. They are taller, leaner and more athletic of all 5 classes. The blues are the most attractive. These dogs are easy as hell to train and are puppy minded for a while. Plus they catch on to guarding pretty quick. They are such lookers that they'll have you looking like an attention whore in public.

You want a Vizsla.
I have one and it is great with my 1.5 year old. they chase each other around all day, but that dog needs to be run a good bit to calm down at all. I was running 5 miles a day with him and would still throw him a frisbee for 20 minutes after to get his energy out.
