There’s gotta be more to this story.

Me and you both. Hopefully everything is ok but I couldn’t imagine being ok with this situation and then talking about it like nothing is wrong. I worked with someone in 06,07, and 2008. This person met, married and had a child with a woman from Guatemala. After his son was born he took off for 6 months to go to her homeland to be with her family, staying home would have never been an option.

3 1/2 months
Had to do a short assignment for my company in Saudi Arabia. It was a great experience that I would definitely do again.

This is the age of FaceTime, grow a pair. I got a cassette tape from my dad once a month for 9-12 months at a time (Navy.)

I remember Dad sending cassette tapes during his last two tours in Vietnam. None of those tapes to my mom showed up in my parent's stuff after they passed. I have one.

Eleven months. Got stuck in Malaysia working a project due to COVID. I could come home to unemployment anytime so we decided to stick it out. My kids are older and moved back in with my wife and worked and studied from our house so that helped a bunch.

One thing I learned is to call my wife every day no matter if you have much to tell her. It’s very important in a marriage to communicate on a daily basis.

Yeah in mid March. We will come home together

Australia is her home. She’s going to be with family, friends, and familiar environments for six months.

I strongly suggest you visit multiple times before March while persistently defining and communicating your plans for the future. They better be good ones too.

Or, prepare to move to Australia to be with your wife and kid.

There’s zero chance she’s jumping back to the States in your scenario without some serious complications for her emotional state and your quality of life.

What do you do for work?

If you have any flexibility, go, now

I would never have agreed to that. Get help at home. She may have PPD but to run away from her problems to go see mommy and daddy is what a kid does, not a grown adult. She needs mental health help and medication. Her parents would have been better to come to her. What if she decides to stay?

About a week. Have a farm in Iowa and a voice came to me while I was in the corn field. Left my wife and young daughter and went to find a man in Boston. He was some writer, and the voice told me to find him. So, I did, and he heard the voice too. So, we drove to a small town in the Midwest to seek out a person who later we find out that he's a Dr. He had already died so the writer and I head back home to Iowa. Crazy story huh?

Four days. My wife goes to Utah each summer to grade AP US Gov. exams. I send the kids to the MIL, then get shite done around the house.

What's the longest you guys spent away from your family? How was it? Wife is gone for 4.5 months with our 6 months son. I feel like I have so much free time even with work. Honestly feel kind of sad.

There have been times when I was gone due to work for a couple of 2-3 weeks at a time and for about 2 days it is great and then I was MISERABLE. I am a daddy. Its what I was born to be. Fortunately I also have an incredible wife who I still admire and enjoy being around. I am pretty unhappy anytime I am not around my family for more than 2-3 days. I love getting away for a few days but I miss them badly after a couple of days. I am sick that way....

I don't know how military families do it. It's a MASSIVE sacrifice we tend to overlook. The adults knew what they were getting into, the kids not so much. We really should thank everyone of them and not just by telling them we appreciate their service....

Military families deal with that, moving states or countries every 2-3 years, etc. it’s one of the reasons I find the Louisiana excuses for staying in state to serve tables with a graduate degree because of family so laughable.

I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than a random rare night away from the family. Is that strange?
Staying close to home was a priority when kids were younger, but at this point I wouldn’t mind some traveling for work or something here and there.

Prayers sent for you, your wife, and family. Hope she rebounds from her depression.

As another poster said, I would encourage you to go early for a visit even if it meant she comes back alone afterwards. Take care!

Oh! Sorry forgot to answer your question. Three weeks is the longest that I have been away from my family.
