re: Longest airport layover you've gone through? Did you sleep in the airport, or get a hotel?

Landed in Amsterdam on the way to Budapest in the middle of the night after flying for about 20 hours. Rather than deal with trying to get a hotel, I opted to just stay in the airport so I could catch the first available flight out in the morning. Ended up not sleeping at all. Airports are damn lonely places in the middle of the night!

DC, had to stay overnight. Bunch of flights delayed. The chairs were packed w/ people, others like me laid down against the wall to try to sleep.

Flight arrived to DC around noon and we didn't start boarding until around 9am or so next morning. I sure as hell didn't take the time to figure how long I was there.

Had a flight that got cancelled. A few of us who were booked on the cancelled flight pooled our resources and got a room. We thought we would at least get a decent night's sleep but a car in the parking lot has an alarm going off every hour or so.

I've got 6 hours tonight/tomorrow morning at JFK after a red-eye. I've done a 20 hr layover in Seoul South Korea before and that was awesome. The Seoul airport allowed for free tours around the city as long as you were connecting, had a great time exploring Korea

Wife's family lives overseas. I usually pick the shortest total flight trip. However, I made an exception one year when the cheapest flight also had the longest layover in Incheon (11 hours). I'd never been to Korea, so I wanted to take advantage of the free tour. Sadly, those tours have been temporarily suspended.

Best airport to get stuck in is Vegas because you can sit there playing slots and drink

I was delayed over 12 hours at JFK once. Was supposed to be an afternoon flight back to New Orleans but didn’t depart until midnight. It was around 2am when we landed. I felt bad for the flight crew since they had to go back to New York afterwards.

10 hours in Vancouver, Canada for a red eye flight. I went downtown and got drunk lol.

Worst delay was an overnight with hotel delay at LaGuardia with my ex gf who I had planned on dumping after our week vacation lol.

I had back to back layovers. First was 15 hours in San Antonio. Next was 18 hours in Baltimore headed to Germany. I was an 18 year old kid in the military without a freaking clue!

Bachelor party flying out of Merida, Mexico [signed a non disclosure]. Flight was late from a with connecting Mexican airline flight in Mexico City to DFW on an AA flight Arrived into Mexico City so late all flights to USA had already left and all our luggage was lost. Took 3 hours to get refunds and luggage back; note they don’t speak English at all. Told everyone I’m not leaving this airport and we stayed at Hilton in Mexico City airport as we had already been arrested for “car theft” for paid for rental cars in Merida that was overturned in a shoddy shakedown for which I hid my money clip in the car seats. Overall delay was about 24 hours and ill never go to a private mansion in Mexico ever again…. Resorts only.

Not sure if counts as a layover, but 3 days in Frankfort, engine malfunctioned during take off, returned to field and sent to a hotel, next day reboarded and started down the runway and returned to gate, third day new plane flown in from Atlanta and we departed. We were given a hotel rom.

The one time I had a missed connection (I watched the door close as I was approaching) I was able to get a manager to put me on the return flight from MSP to where I came from and then fly out the next day. It was a bit humorous at the time because it was the same cabin staff in the return/next day flight through Detroit. My employer was PISSED that I missed my connection. I remember the exact day because I watched the Thailand Tsunami coverage in DET.

The whole situation was a blessing. I sat with my parents for 2 hours before getting into the original flight to MSP. My stepdad picked me up and took me back the next day. My son was born in April, we got him home 10 days later, we did a Webcam chat on the next Sunday night, and I got a call at 11:30 the next day that he had died. When people question God, karma, etc. I always think back to the events of those 5 months as proof.

ETA: The same job had me training everyone until I asked for a supplemental raise for the additional responsibilities. 2 months later they announced that they were shifting responsibilities for our jobs. My request was thrown in my face when I asked why I wasn't being sent to Pune, India to train them. Again divine intervention. I dodged what was a pretty horrible week in Ireland (I went to Silicon Valley instead) and I heard the Pune trip was a shitshow.

Same flight, exact opposite direction. Arrived in Seattle from Anchorage and had a connecting flight at 5 the next morning. Unrolled my thermarest and slept on the floor. It would have been fine except for the no smoking announcements every 15 minutes.
