My brother and I are headed to a golf trip this weekend about 6 hours away. We go every year and alternate who’s driving. This year, he is driving and in years past I have always just played in my phone or watched some shows. I was listening to a podcast recently and the comment was made “...you’re the type of guy that has headphones in during a road trip....”. Got me thinking, it’s it an unspoken rule that during road trips you must entertain or be available to the driver? I never saw a problem with passing the time by watching some shows on my phone.

Sleeping would be ok, so why wouldn’t watching a show?

Feel like it’s more about the quality time of the trip, which in this case would mean actually having conversation and making memories with your brother, your shows and podcast can wait.

Why don't you just sit in the back and let him chauffeur you?

You have a chance to spend six hours with your brother and you are going to spend it on the phone? The fact you have to ask this / post about it tells a lot. You should seriously rethink your priorities.

I’m usually the driver on long trips and I have no problem with people zoning out with the use of a phone or headphones or sleeping. I’d do the same.

When I’m driving on long road trips I prefer everyone to have their heads in their phone.

A little talking every once in a while is fine. But I’m more interested in staying focused at high speeds.

I don't have an issue driving long distances because the road keeps your mind at least somewhat occupied. If you are a passenger knock yourself out on your phone

My wife alternates between her phone, sleep, yelling at the kids.

A long time ago I'd be pissed because I wanted that quality conversation time. Now I don't care.

When it's guys fishing trip weekend, no one touches their phone for the whole trip down or back.

I don't like doing road trips with more than one other person in the car. And unless you're passing me a joint, let me concentrate on the road.

If I’m on a road trip with friends or family, I’m not sleeping or playing on my phone constantly. I may pick up my phone every now and then, but I’m mostly conversing with the other person. It annoys me when I’m driving and my wife just wants to sleep or play on her phone.

You act as if a six hour trip is somehow cross country! How many times do you guys switch up?!
A six hour drive to me is basically a Sunday cruise.

Golden rule of long trips. Driver gets control of the radio/podcast/whatever. Passengers can do whatever the frick they want. It's not the 1980's where you need a passenger there reading a map to give you directions.

Guys typically don't have to conversate at the levels women do. Probably on an order of 1/4 as much. But, it's not 0. I have college aged 2 sons, one of which him and I will carry on a normal conversation in a car, the other it's like pulling teeth to get him to talk.

I usually drive and I will put in earbuds to listen to podcast and such. Crime In Sports isnt really family friendly in the language dept.

You should spend time talking with your brother, dad or friend in this situation. You should use the headphones when on trips with wife/GF.

I kind of feel like this is the correct answer, for the most part. I do think watching phone for all 6-hours is too much but 1/2 & 1/2 is fair. My brother isn't a talker too much and sometimes it's pulling teeth to get him to converse, but since we're going on a golf trip we talk a lot about golf and of course friendly banter about how i'll whoop his arse the upcoming weekend.

He's also a very much go with the flow kind of guy so if I were to watch my phone the entire way, he wouldn't care or if I talked the entire way, he wouldn't care.

No issue at all. Why should the entire car have to listen to what I want to play through the car speakers?

I take my sons (21 and 28) on a road trip to Dallas or Houston every year for Supercross. The only rules are that I control the music played, no headphones, and no playing on your cell phone. The time passes so mch quicker when you’re having conversations instead of everyone being in their own little world.

Oh yeah...one other rule - roll down the window if you’re gonna fart.

ETA: The best conversations were when we listened to the Rogan/Alex Jones podcast.
