We vacationed on the east side of Puerto Rico and stayed at the Waldorf Astoria this summer. Absolutely beautiful, but we rented a car and drove the 35 miles from San Juan to Fajardo. Outside of the resort, the people I dealt with were amongst the rudest I had ever encountered.
Could not imagine living there. 90 percent of the Carribbean is straight up ghetto poverty. We talked to a guy from Tulsa who had dropped everything to move down there and live the island life. Only job he could find that paid decent was a valet at the resort. Said the management and high paying resort jobs were basically secured by dirty politics. I imagine the USVI is very similar.

My uncle lived in St. Thomas for 15 years doing construction on all the island resorts down there that were constantly torn up from hurricanes. The natives absolutely hate people from the States and especially whites. Once you get away from the touristy areas (where their true sentiment is suppressed), it's rough and break-in's and theft are highly prevalent. He said it's a shame since it's so beautiful, but that's the way it is and they're not changing anytime soon. He also said St. Croix is really rough compared to St. Thomas.

What this guy said on Puerto Rico. You can go to a secluded part of the island for the island/beachy feeling to live...but can get the same amnemities as the US with a drive to San Juan.

My wife and I stayed in San Juan for a few days and then Isabela for three days. All the people we met where great. If you work in the financial industry Puerto Rico could have good opportunities the next few years.

My massage therapist lives there 6 months out of the year. Her parents bought beach property and rent it out. She loves it, she said the BVI are nicer but hey, who's nitpicking?

Honestly, if you want the island life without the third-world issues, choose Hawaii over any Caribbean island.
Hawaii, or the Big Island, has some great housing values. Much better than anywhere else in the islands.

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. There are several Caribbean islands that have very low crime rates and are incredible places to live. They're also more expensive than most islands. St. John is certainly one and others like Anguilla, Providenciales and St. Barths are wonderful and safe.

I want to save up and retire down there but live on a sail boat. Can always move island to island.

Been to St. John for a wedding. 
We were there in the off-season and it was perfect. I've seen pictures of the place during peak seasons.
The same couple moved to St. John about 2 years ago. They wouldn't trade it.

Agree with that list. Anguilla is one of the few I've not spent time in or done some consulting work in. I would add Aruba to that list of a livable place and not 3rd world country like. It was always easy to strike up a conversation when someone found out I'm from Birmingham.
