My dad lived in Independence, Kansas for 4 years working on a project. It's basically in the middle of nowhere about an hour and a half north of Tulsa.
He loved it and said it was like living in Mayberry.

Really not much to see from Ok City to Denver.
Oberlin has a museum devoted to the last Indian raid in Kansas, when the Northern Cheyenne broke out of their reservation in Oklahoma in a desperate attempt to get back to the Dakotas.
Lindsborg is a little town founded by Swedes and has a big Scandinavian festival every year. There are other places of interest but those are two I remember. Everywhere has something to see if you look for it.

I have a client in Topeka... no airport. I have to fly into Kansas City. PIA to get to/from.
I had to look this up because it is unbelievable that a state capital has no active air service. Wow, that is crazy.

It is legal to chase tornadoes, they have storm spotter classes in most any state to give you some knowledge as to what you are doing.
If you are around Wichita, you can go to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, it's a pretty cool place to visit.

I have to go to Kansas for work for a few days next week and I'm dreading it bigly. I couldn't imagine actually having to live there.

Hutch also has the only salt mine you can tour in the US, hosts the State fair every year. I wouldn't call it a can't miss destination, but there's some interesting stuff there.
Whoever mentioned the Swedish festival in Lindsborg is spot on. That is also an interesting experience. If you're near Abiliene, you can visit Eisenhower's presidential library.

quote:im sure it's probably storm spotter training. I've gone chase a couple times, nobody's gonna pull you over specifically for that.
I may be misremembering. A guy in high school worked as a part-time radio guy. They wouldn’t let him chase until he had something. Not sure if that was a radio station policy or something else.
I went out to a storm in hutch in may of last year and thought I was gonna die for a bit. Made me realize my atmos degree doesnt really mean shite when it comes to that stuff.

Freezing cold and no trees.

I've lived in Lawrence and Overland Park for fairly short stints. Lawrence is the best place in Kansas and is very livable, one of the better places I've lived. Overland Park is fairly boring suburbia but everything is nice and it's a great place to raise a family. There are plenty of trees and hills in both places. I would not want to live much further west than Lawrence.
Tornado hotspots - there's really no point but if that is your thing then go to Oklahoma.

I drove though Kansas once on my way to Colorado, and it was less diverse in topography than Louisiana. Flat, flat, flat and boring.

Lived on the Kansas side of Kansas City most of my life. It isn't that much different than the suburbs of any larger city (I've lived in a few) but there is absolutely zero reason to visit Kansas as a tourist.
