I'm not sure how anyone could shoot some of those animals in good conscience. Some of them are pretty sedentary and would literally have just laid there while they got shot

Remember this was 1909. As mentioned, the only way to learn about them is to have a body to study. Which means you can either shoot one or scavenge the savannah for weeks hoping to find an intact specimen.

This was basically the real life equivalent to hunting in Red Dead Redemption.

While people are melting down over the hunt in 1909 The Chinese are clearing out the wildlife left and right. Cannot imagine the number of animals being killed for "traditional Chinese medicine"

If you do you're taking some animal's meal or two.

Yeah you can't promote the natural world of science by only killing 1 or 2 lions or rhinos. You need to kill at least 17 to promote science.

China is the new "colonial power" in Africa, albeit projecting their power in a different way. They don't care who's the dictator du jour. They'll work with anyone to open huge mines, etc. and it's a scary proposition for the wildlife there.

Damn. I'd announce myself loudly if I approached his stand. He was shooting anything that moved.

Kinda ironic he was the conservation president and done more for the national park system than any other person.

I would love to let him loose in some areas of New Orleans see what kind of tally he could come up with if he's killing Savage animals

The animals killed on that expedition ended up in not just the Smithsonian (it was their funded expedition) but in numerous other museums across the country.

You also have to keep in mind at the time, the herds of animals that roamed East Africa were significantly larger than what we see now. He merely made a dent.

Well, that's kind of the idea behind most conservation, license fees, bag limits, Etc. Preservation of habitat, to enjoy the harvesting for future generations. Teddy must have known that he needed to protect vast swaths of land if there were more like him, I guess...
