Yeah you can't promote the natural world of science by only killing 1 or 2 lions or rhinos. You need to kill at least 17 to promote science.

Teddy was the founder of the national park system, do you really think a guy like that would savagely just shoot anything that moved? Maybe, but doubtful.

As said, he was there for mostly research purposes although he definitely loved to hunt. Most of those animals were killed specifically for one reason or another to study them.

I have no idea how many lions are killed by hunters every year today, but Teddy was possibly the only hunter shooting lions back then. So its not like he even made a dent in any of their populations. As said, the smithsonian could of asked him to bring back many males and females.

I've never heard of many of those animals, specifically the Dikdik.

Shooting monkeys seems a little useless to me.

Based on the list in the OP, it's pretty certain the answer to your question is yes.

, it was a completely different time and place and environment back then.

True. And a lot of animals went extinct due to excess hunting back in the day. The passenger pigeon for example. They used to have contests to see who could kill the most. In order to be in contention for winning you had to shoot 30,000 or more pigeons.

shite, we hunted Great White sharks to near extinction after Jaws came out.

We know so much more now about how to preserve and save animal species than we did in the 70's, and exponentially more than we did 100 years ago.

Again, Teddy was pretty much the only guy doing this back then, and we know a lot of what we know about these animals because of that.

As the Rev. George Carlin says.

"Let me tell you about endangered species, all right? Saving endangered species is just one more arrogant attempt by humans to control nature. It's arrogant meddling. It's what got us in trouble in the first place. Doesn't anybody understand that? Interfering with nature. Over 90%, way over 90% of all the species that have ever lived on this planet, ever lived, are gone. They're extinct. We didn't kill them all. They just disappeared. That's what nature does.
