Limiting internet/phone access while at home

What do you think about this:

No internet-connected phones/tablets/laptops in the home. If you want/need to get on the Internet, there is 1 desktop computer at a dedicated computer desk that has internet access. Just like it was in the 90’s.

Your phones go in a dedicated basket as if they are connected there. No texting while at home. Obviously you can make an exception when necessary, but the majority of the time this is how it is.

I’m thinking of implementing this “rule” in my house. Do you think it’s a good idea? Viable or doomed to fail?

Would probably be good for your family if it succeeds. 0 fricking chance of it succeeding though.

If y'all are cool with me masturbating in the same location you'll use to access the internet then I'm game

Sounds miserable as frick.

You already live in Arkansas, why make it worse than it has to be?

It's a great idea if you want your kids to hate you.

It wouldn’t work with my wife and I due to work.

If we still lived in the 90’s and we weren’t expected to be connected to our emails 24/7 it could work and would be great, IMO.

Unrealistic for me for work purposes. We are a 24/7 business and I sometimes get after hours calls/texts/emails that I have to answer. We don't have a home phone.

But think of it this way - you still get to login and read TD when you want. You would just have to make more of an “event” out of it by going over to the desktop computer. Reading TD would become more like reading the paper - you log in once or twice a day, read through only the most interesting topics, and close it down. You’re not refreshing the page every 10 minutes like a crack addict.

That likely wouldn’t last long.

Have you tried telling your kids to put their phones down when you think they’ve been on it too much and they aren’t doing anything productive on it? If so, do you you also suggest for them to do something with you when they are off their phone, like play a game or go for a walk or just sit and talk?

I’ve heard of a lot of parents fussing at their kids to get off their phones, but don’t suggest something positive for them to do once the phone is put away. Most kids are on their phones out of boredom. Give them something meaningful to do with you. They will end up gladly putting their phone away for positive attention with their parents.

What's going to happen after the first 10 minutes and you run out of things to discuss with your wife?

I don’t allow phones while we are eating supper. I use to let my young boys play games on their kindles but I took them away months ago for being bad to their momma while I’m at work. They are good now but I haven’t given them back. The only exception is on weekends when weather is shitty. My older kids aren’t too bad on them but like I said, no phones at the dinner table. Fortunately even throughout the day my older ones don’t stay glued on their phones like some kids are.

I also don’t let them play on phones in public. Nothing against kids that do, I’m speaking of really young. My 6y/o and 9y/o aren’t gonna be glued to a damn phone in public. I watched a kid a few months ago walk into his mom and fall down b/c he couldn’t look up from a phone, it was funny, but pathetic.

Probably what guys did in the past to get away from their wives. Bowling league, cards night, whatever. No one I know does shite like that anymore on the regular, probably because we are all entertained all the time and don’t feel the need to stay “connected” via regular in person activities.

There is a very expensive private school in California, Waldarf Academy. The wealthy executives from Google and other silicon valley companies fight to send their kids there. The attraction, no technology, the kids are not allowed too have calculators, phones, tablets, PCs in class, or at home. The school uses pencil, paper, blackboards and books. Wonder what these silicon valley execs know about technology and kids that we don't?
