A familiar face on the local political scene is part of Lifetime’s new online campaign, "Her America: 50 Women, 50 States."

East Baton Rouge Parish Metro Councilwoman Chauna Banks is Louisiana's representative in the initiative aimed to give voices to women across America.

In sharing these 50 women's stories, Lifetime says it hopes "to bring women closer together and amplify the voices that go unheard and unrecognized."

Her essay

quote:

“Race is not anything anybody wants to talk about in Baton Rouge,” says Chauna. But she believes it’s impossible to avoid. “African-Americans are told to pull themselves up by the boot strings. There are no strings in our boots.” In the late 1950s, Scotlandville began to decline as the city broke up the neighborhood with an interstate highway and demolished homes in middle-class subdivisions to build an airport and a water treatment plant. Poverty rose, as did crime. Property values sank. Stores closed. Many who could move did.

quote:

Across the country, those who live, work, and play in America’s most contaminated areas are commonly poor people of color. Chauna sees it as a cycle. Businesses and banks don’t want to invest in an area notorious for contaminated land and dirty air. As property values decline and people become disenfranchised, those areas are targeted for more facilities with negative environmental impacts. “Significant sacrifices have been made by the people of this community on behalf of the entire city parish,” says Chauna. “And they got nothing back.”

Liberals like to point to things like this as the culprit for destroying black neighborhoods. In Nola, if you can believe this nonsense, there are people who actively want to demolish the I-10–the stretch from the superdome to Elysian Fields—because when it was built, it ruined everything. Such nonsense.

I missed the part where she honestly discussed the 80% out of wedlock birth rates, the unbelievable social pathologies ( crime , poverty, blight ) that come from it, and the personal moral responsibility all citizens have to make their communities a better place.

Will had a thread with almost the same title as this one that he started on the 9th.

I did a search for Banks and when I saw post from the 11th and no mention of this article that the advocate posted today, I thought it hadn't been posted here yet.

Rookie mistake on my part

The funny thing is that someone at Lifetime saw that quote and still decided to select her as one of their 50

why does it seem like every North Baton Rouge "advocate"'s (SWB, Chauna, Dennise, Gravy, etc) only solution for the problems of Baton Rouge and mainly NBR is: "sumbody write us a check, cuz we done ben wrong by the rich white people before us" ?

let's publicly and shamelessly blame the upper class and middle class people of Baton Rouge for ruining everything and holding down BR AA's, but then guilt them to open their pocket books.
