Because we will run out of resources on this planet before we run out of places to live. There's a reason those areas are barren. They have no resources and unlivable temps.
Mars theoretically could be more easily manipulated and have more resources.
More people on earth means more pollution, more waste, and nowhere to put it.

Someone will do it. Whoever gets there first will shape the politics and demographics of the planet.
I doubt your average Europeans personally cared too much about the rough living in the Americas 500 years ago. Today the United States (born of Europe) is one of its greatest allies.
If this continent was essentially a second Japan, China, or whoever else decided to come here the free democratic European lifestyle might be in danger
200 or 300 years from now whoever got to Mars first will have a huge impact on every human life on earth and Mars, and will shape the politics and lifestyles of the future solar system

What I've never understood is why don't we attempt to do some colonization of the Moon first? Wouldn't that make sense as a trial run before we attempt Mars, which would be a much, much bigger undertaking.

That is an issue, Mars isn't much better though. Only 1/3 of earths surface gravity. So you would still have loss in bone density and other problems

I disagree. Proving you can colonize another planet is like the next pinnacle of human achievement. Mars is obviously the best option to try it and learn from it (or the moon).

I have heard talk that some people want to build a permanent base on the moon to be a launching pad to further missions. I don't know much about the wheels being in motion on any of this stuff.

If the earth explodes due to a cataclysmic event, the moon goes too, but Mars doesn't. It's Hummanity hedging its bets for survival.
Also, Mars is farther and a bigger task. We've been to the moon. Multiple times. We've never been to Mars. It's how you get people interested.
Further, Mars offers the possibility of resources and terraforming, etc.... The moon doesn't.

Terraforming is irrelevant if you can't get the core of Mars active again. Without the electromagnetic shield an active core produces life in the Martian surface is not feasible (at least an earth like surface life).
