Sounds nice until you move there and find out that all of your neighbors are meth addicts who live off welfare.

Drove through Beckley, West Virginia in the early 2000s. It was rainy, cold and overcast.
It looked so impoverished and at the time the most depressing place I had ever seen.

I grew up just outside of Moundsville. Both sides of my family have been in upper Ohio Valley area since the 1780s.

isn't the panhandle more Ohio than WV, in a sense?

Ironton...
You have to pronounce it correctly - Like you were from across the river in Ashland: "Arnt'n"

One could live very well in WV on 100K a year. Might be a good place to retire.

Its also beautiful.

I'm guessing Stuebenville.
Eta: Dammit, that's Ohio. It's Wheeling, if you get the feeling.

When I was a teenager we had a trip to WV to work on people's houses. I don't remember where in the state we were, but it was POOR. Depressingly poor.
These days, opiates are ravaging much of WV, there's little corporate investment in the state, and it's riddled with poverty.
Beautiful? Oh yeah.
Some nice parts? Definitely.
But let's be real, there's a reason the population is so low in that state...it's a shithole, for the most part.

Northern WV, southeast/eastern Ohio, and western PA I would say are more connected to each other than their respective states. It is northern Appalachia.
Pittsburgh for example has way more in common with the people of that area than Philadelphia on the other side of the state.

I grew up in a holler in southern WV. Those of you who are saying it's a beautiful place are 100% correct. One of the hidden gems of the country. Those of you saying it's a very impoverished place with limited opportunities are also 100% correct. Opioids and the lefts war on fossil fuels have transformed it into a very different place than I remember.

Philadelphia is a east coast cosmopolitan city that has a lot in common with NYC and NJ in terms of the kind of people that live there. Very diverse, a lot of Italians and Jewish people that live there, and it has an Ivy League university that bolsters the economy.
It has absolutely nothing in common within Western PA or WV at all. Trying to compare Philadelphia with a dying rust belt city like Pittsburgh is laughable.

It was worse than Ferriday, or maybe just seemed to be due to the gloomy weather. Whatever the reason, it left a lasting impression on me.

They not afraid to let their toddler ride 4 wheelers...we should strive to be more like them.
