My dad and I spent many a morning chuckling over his columns. I’ve got a bunch of his books stashed away somewhere. “If you aren’t the lead dog, your scenery never changes” my favorite quote of his.

My dad is a big fan of Grizzard. He has all his books and Ive read them. He was funny and I loved watching his stand up comedies. On the road with Lewis Grizzard is my favorite. Loves how he tells the audience he's gonna talk about something serious- College football and then he asks everyone who they are a fan of and then cracks a joke about them.

And his joke about Ole Blue!!
And the one about sitting up with the dead makes me LMAO.

No, but suicide, old age, drugs, and being beaten to death in prison made that list.

Why would he be a closet LSU fan?

I grew up reading him and another is Mike Royko who wrote for the Chicago Tribune.

And Dave Berry who wrote for the Miami Herald. He has some great books too and he’s still around.

GA lost that game, 35-18. I think that, while he would never admit it, he was an LSU fan, deep down inside.

I believe half his ashes were spread in one of the UGAG end zones. No, I looked it up and the story said 50 yard line.

Everybody has his faults.

I read his autobiography about working at the newspaper before becoming a columnist - sounded like a real grind. He could write.

That’s not some impressive list of people who died in the same year. Looks pretty mundane.

In the late 80s, I lived in Atlanta and worked with a bunch of people of the northern persuasion. They were highly educated and fancied themselves as writers. They hated Grizzard and would read his columns so they could trash him. I guess he struck a nerve with his Delta is ready when you are comment -- and they kind of proved his point about how they acted.

His line on The Varsity, like many of his great lines, was spot on: "Chili dogs bark at night."

Anyone who likes/liked Lewis Grizzard should read Rick Bragg. He’s a great southern writer and has some great books. He started out covering Bear Bryant.

He writes the last column in Southern Living monthly as well as a lot for Garden and Gun.

That reminds me of one of my favorite lines. “The only good thing to come out of Chicago is I-65 South”.

He also talks about going to the Harvard-Yale game. He was asked by one of the snobs “Who are you rooting for; Yale or fair Harvard?” His response “Y’all are a bunch of damn Yankees and I hope you both lose!”

One of my favorite passages from Don't Bend Over in the Garden, Granny, You Know Them Taters Got Eyes:

you have to sit through all that time when some four-eyes is begging you to send in money to keep public broadcasting on the air. At least when Jimmy Swaggart or Jim Bakker begged for money, they put a little show biz into the thing. They at least cried or whined about having to pay off their bills.

All you get on PBS is, “If you become a member at the forty-dollar level, we’ll send you a valuable premium, such as an album featuring Peruvians playing the flute or a certificate indicating you have adopted a whale.”
