OP needs to clarify. Are we talking about a big grocery store with large parking lot and open spaces, or a small neighborhood grocery where people are waiting for spots to open?
The dude already said this in his original post:

FWIW, the parking lot was not over crowded and this person could’ve easily found another spot. Not sure why he had to have mine.

It's a spot for your car while you're frequenting that business. If you're spending an inordinate amount of time in your car while there, you're obviously not using the spot for its intended purpose.

There is a balance here. If the parking lot isn't full then guy should just go park somewhere else. However if the parking lot is full, then I'm going to be considerate and go ahead and quickly open up a spot for people waiting. My kid's preschool parking lot is tiny and the morning drop off is always jam packed with cars. I'm not going to sit there on my phone while other parents are waiting for a spot in that situation. That's a jackass move in that situation.

Ok... Ok... didn't see this at first. I retract my statements.

I went to the walmarts today and some jackarse in a truck parked diagonally across two handicapped spaces comes skipping out da store sucking on a mountain dew. I'm trying to park in the handicapped space so maw can get her diabetus prescription before she has another leg amputated. Well, this bastard gets into his truck, throws the Mt dew can on the ground and starts looking at emails and stuff when I kindly honk to let him know we're waitin on the handicapped parking spot. he hollars something about bein a coot or cooth or something so I had to get out put a couple of popknots on his head.

If there are other spots easily available, then I see no issue with sitting in your car.
However, if the lot is full and someone is waiting for the spot, it is much more civilized to just leave and let that person in the spot.

Then I see no issue.
Similarly, if you're pumping gas and finish and get in your car, and someone has been waiting behind you and it takes you minutes to drive away, you're a douche. Or just oblivious, in which case your oblivion should be cause to have your DL revoked.

Is it really that big of a deal to get a spot as close as possible?
I guess, for you, it is. They have made a huge production of even making laws about it. Nationwide. All the way across the Rockies.

Kinda sounds like what was going on
I'm in the other camp, if it is a crowded lot, I thin the proper etiquette is to show a little hustle in leaving, especially since you should be aware of your surroundings and know if a car is waiting on you.
Now, let's say you know you gotta check your phone or reply to some work email, you can just wave that person on letting them know you'll be a few minutes.
If there were truly a bunch of other nearby spots, I think the OP is in the right here, that car coulda parked in a nearby spot. If it's a truly busy day with limited spots, the proper parking lot etiquette would be to try to not unnecessarily hold up the spot without waving the person on.

quote:That's correct, but we're talking about proper parking lot etiquette.
If you got the spot it's your spot.
They have no place to tell you when to leave.
The proper etiquette is for the OP to be aware of his surroundings. He's certainly well within his "rights" etiquette-wise to check his phone, fumble around for his soda, but the proper etiquette would be for him to wave on the person waiting for him.

This crossed my mind too. What kind of slob feels compelled to search those grocery bags for soda immediately after exciting the store?

Understandable, but don't drink and drive.
