I've been traveling to Beaumont pretty regularly now for about a year. Why does it suck so bad? Downtown is dead, crime is horrible, and the hotels are subpar. Any thoughts?

I think it sucks because of the horrible crime, lack of nightlife and poor hotels.

White people have moved to Lumberton, Sour Lake, Nederland, Groves, etc. Young people get the hell out as soon as they can. Houston is about an hour away. Downtown has always been dead and they tried to revive Crockett street a few years ago but I'm not sure whats left over there. What nightlife there is will be on Phelan in the west end part of beaumont and maybe around parkdale mall. Courville's has some good bands come through.

Couldn't agree more. I just dont understand why it hasn't blown up into something comparable to lake chuck. What's holding it back?

It's an incurably depressing shithole. Young people with ambition move away, and the people who do move to Beaumont move there because they think it's some kind of Norman Rockwell small town, which tells you a lot about them.

I'm betting you've never been to Mt. Pleasant TX.

I mean, it’s bigger than Lake Charles. It has a good-sized port. That’s about it. What does Lake Charles have that I’m missing? Casinos?

There is actually a bluff on the neches that the settlers saw and thought the other side would be more high land.
