The answer is demographics. When integration occurred, the white folks took their kids to adjoining, small town districts, or were allowed to break away for their own district.
A few years ago, before the state took them over, the Beaumont ISD superintendent was the highest paid in the state. Go figure.

Sounds familiar. Where have I heard about this before?

Just happy to crack on another town besides BR for a change...

I’m okay driving through it. I wouldn’t want to live in it.

Believe it or not, Beaumont has some ballers. Homes in the Thomas Road area are in the million++ range.

I love this as if Beaumont was Paris during Jim Crow
Every shitty southern town blames their problems on the other side of the tracks.

Saw Jerry Jeff Walker play there back in the mid 90’s. A fight broke out in the crowd. JJW says “that’s the first time in ten years that a fight has broken out out in the middle of a concert”. Crowd cheers “Yaaaaahhh”. JJW says “that’s not cool”.
Other than the Parkland mall and going to Smith Lake (in nearby racist Vidor), that’s my Beaumont experience.

West Brook High had a good football team. Spindletop is there. That’s 2 more things that were once ‘good’.

If your black go check out Vidor

Forgot about the Babe Diedeickson Zaharius museum. Kind of a neat place. All 314 square feet of it (estimating radius of the circular museum at 10 feet).

Beaumont isn't that bad. Just incredibly boring if you don't have a family or duck hunt 24/7. Port Arthur on the other hand, is fricking terrible. No redeeming qualities aside from producing some great Houston rap.

Beaumont is the only decent sized cities in Texas where they can’t keep a good steakhouse, but the Golden corral is one of the top grossing ones in the entire chain. That should tell you why it sucks.

That feeding trough (Golden Corral) is always full so thats not a surprise. Saltgrass, Floyd's and Jerry Nelsons are the top 3 steakhouses that come to mind. None of which are spectacular.

Because trial lawyers and unions have been running the place for decades.

Once I went down under the I10 Sabine river bridge turnaround, and someone had spray painted in neon letters on the side of the bridge, "frick pussy arse Orange, Texas."

Because it's a garbage city. That whole area can E.A.D. Port Arthur, Bridge City, Beaumont. All of them are pretty shite towns with terrible residents. Terrible local restaurants and bars. Roads are falling apart. Half the city still has tarp roofs from Rita. The locals try to break in your truck if you leave it for more than 10 minutes.
And what's with Vidor always smelling like burnt sewage every time I drive by on I-10?
